Farmhouse ale. Saison. Not sure which but this is high up high up my leader board for each. Not to crazy in yeast and not banana bread overpowering. Wonder how a year or two old one would taste.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Urban Brew. Clear, cola-ish pour with a medium head that disappears quickly. Not much in the way of aroma, a little rye and pepper. Taste is the same - pretty light on everything, but coffee, rye, and pepper all come through. Really thin. Not my thing, but a refreshing enough saison.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz bottle into a glass. Itís over one and a half years old, so fingers crossed itís held up.
A: Pours a hazy chestnut color with tons of evident carbonation. The head is a two finger mocha shade. Very airy in texture, it retains itself quite well - fantastically, even. Leave it sitting long enough, and excellent lacing will be left on the glass.
S: A one-two-three punch of caramel, chocolate, and nuts really come through once this warms up. Before that, the aroma mainly consists of bready Belgian yeast and just a touch of black pepper spice. Not really getting how this is even a dark saison - this smells like a Belgian brown ale with some spiciness. Pleasant nonetheless.
T: The flavors seem to reveal more in the way of roasted coffee notes, especially around the midtaste. It opens with bready yeast flavors, developing a faint fruit quality (apples, pears, white grapes) right before the roast takes over. Chocolate, caramel, and sliiight (emphasis on all the iís, itís faint) cherry esters come out on the aftertaste. Iím beginning to wonder if the pepper notes have died down with age, because Iím not picking them up on the flavor profile. Overall, thereís a modicum of complexity, but none of the funk notes I like in my saisons.
M: Wow, this is strongly carbonated. It can be a bit much at times, but it also has the positive effect of drying the beer out very well. The lightness of body helps all that carbonation come through even more vividly. Okay, now Iím more inclined to believe that this is a dark saison - the mouthfeel is (nearly) dead on, helping to accentuate the coffee notes quite well.
O: Dark saison or really dry, fizzy Belgian brown? I donít care, this is damn good. It lacks some of the fine-tuned sophistication to make it a true great of the style (...whatever that style is), but considering I got this on clearance, thatís really a moot point. Put it this way, Iíd gladly get this again at regular price.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Edition bottled 2011 and 6% ABV.
Appearance: Clear ruby/dark brown with a finger thick ivory head.
Aroma: Vinous, brandy, citrus, bread, prunes, caramel/toffee, marzipan and perhaps notes of sour cherry.
Taste: Low/medium sweetness, low bitterness and medium/high sourness.
Palate: Thin light smooth texture with a light body, slight astringency and average carbonation. The lingering finish is quite tart with vinous notes, prune, toffee, and has a very subtle chocolate note to it.
Comments: This was delicious. There was a slight glass lacing. It reminded me more of a Flemish sour ale than a saison.

Trade with Aurelius - thanks! Dark cola pour, bubbly, foamy khaki colored head. Aroma has some hints of potting soil, some roasted notes. Flavor is full bodied with some nutty notes, a hint of unsweetened chocolate, some roasted notes, a bit of cigar smoke. Mouthfeel has a nice dry chalkiness to it.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle, bottled on 1/15/13. Shared with caterwaul. Very dark brown color. Light brown / red color around the edges, but body is near-black. Nice thin khaki head. Dots and short ropes of lace. Good-lookng stuff. Bigger body. Smooth, creamy carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Very nice black peppercorn aroma, not too spicy though. Chocolate, dark malts, light darkf ruit. Not as spicy as a typical saison, nice robust sort of portery-ness to it. Alden says it has a pumpkin finish. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter. Tasty, dark farmhouse.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Deep brown black with ruby highlights and a decent ashen tan head. Pleasant chocolate malts trying to coexist with light tartness and slight funk, maybe some very deep treacle, dune off the grape juice you get with stouts, more quite enough saison for me. Medium body, velvety effervescence. Lots of friendly, rich chocolate, grapes, dark treacle, very little saison; off dry with gentle bitterness and a pleasant, dark roasted malt finish.
