COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A black rye saison that combines a roasted/smoky malt character in balance with a pepper spice from the yeast. Finishes dry with a refreshing level of carbonation.

Bottle. Fairly dark with voluminous foamy tan head. Smells like chocolate and brown sugar with a hint of lemon and a hint of spiciness- almost akin to licorice. Has a bite to it, then a warming sweetness comes in balanced by a dryness. Bit of a sweet finish with a little hit of spice at the end. I would drink this.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/20/2011. Pours hazy and cloudy very dark reddish brown color with a nice 2-3 finger foamy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big raisin, prune, fig, apple, clove, pepper, molasses, dark candi sugar, toast, light roast, light smoke, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy esters with big malt presence; and good strength. Taste of raisin, fig, apple, pepper, clove, toast, molasses, roasted malt, dark candi sugar, light smoke, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, pepper, clove, molasses, toast, roasted malt, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of fruity/spicy yeast esters with a great dark malt balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly slick, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent black saison style. All around nice complexity and balance of fruity/spicy ester notes with dark malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

765 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a dark, ruby-tinged brown with lasting tan head. Aroma is roasty dark and fruity malts with spicy Belgian yeast. Flavour is quite roasty with cocoa, grape, pear, modest spiciness and a gentle funkiness. Medium plus body. Rather nice.

750mL bottle I got from the LCBO amidst the bi-annual ’oh shit they’re going on strike’ shopping spree people go on when they are suddenly reminded that they are alcoholics. Opaque dark brown and a big tan head. The aroma is interesting but not as much as the flavour to come. I just get a big whiff of Belgian yeast that reminds me of Unibroue, with undistinguished dark malts and fruits. But the flavour is quite interesting. The roasty smoke element is definitely present but not in an ostentatious way. Rich and creamy chocolate malt rides along the surprisingly smooth palate. I actually get very little of the fruit character I would typically expect from something like this. I wouldn’t say that the yeast character is peppery like it’s supposed to be, but it’s still interesting. A very good beer although the price is a bit ridiculous.

Bottle from LCBO. Pours a super dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is a very nice combination of "saison" and roasted barley. Taste has caramel, roasted notes, vanilla, spice, and light fruit notes. Medium-full body. I really enjoyed this.

Pours dark brown with a frothy tan head. Notes of dark fruit and roasted malt on the nose with a bit of yeast and bread.Taste is a great balance between sweet and bitter with a bit of a spicy dry finish. Overall a delicious beer and something different

Just a gorgeous beer. Puffy dark tan head over viscous black body. Salls over the palate velvety and light like silk. Yet bursting with subtle flavours of cocoa, grapes, kola-spicy phenolics, sweet grassy hops, lemon, decadent fresh whole grain bread, vanilla. Aroma clean and bright. Really offers a lot and now it sucks that I will want more of this drug for twelve bucks a hit. Sexy beer for sexy bitches!

Bottle from Henry’s: Created a monstrous sizing of foamed head which took several minutes to fully retreat. The liquid was a dark brown with an amber reddish tint. As for the nose, there was a spicy scent of smoked dark malt with a notice of pepper and some floral aroma that hinted towards fruit perhaps banana. Taste is heavily spiced with dashes of pepper, clove and sweet malts that left behind an aftertaste of cigar tobacco.

Bottle from central market. Pours a very dark brown color with a foamy beige colored head. Aroma is roasty right off the bat. Some Belgian fruit and yeasty notes as well with perhaps a small funky bit. Flavor is roasted first, with a bitter farmhouse zest. Flavor is a bit funky, earthy finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
