COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A black rye saison that combines a roasted/smoky malt character in balance with a pepper spice from the yeast. Finishes dry with a refreshing level of carbonation.

Draft at Cincy Winter Beerfest. Aroma is roasted wheat, toasted malts, and yeast. I get notes of black pepper, smoke, lemmon, and some other spices. Flavor brings out a bananna type flavor, finnishing dry. Not bad.

Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Browish pour with a small off-white head. Aroma of red apples and earthy toast. Flavor of yeasty fruits. Toasted grain and spice. Mellow sweet finish. Medium body, active carbonation. Pretty forgettable, but decent.

Pours dark amber with small tan head out of bottle. Aroma of malt and spice. Flavor similar to smell but with characteristics of an amber ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I home brewed a dark bitter saison that this reminded me a whole lot of. Except this had some age on it, and it was crisp. So basically my home brew plus aged and mashed at a lower temp. Gonna nail it.

12 Oz bottle. Pours black with an off-white head. Flavor and aroma changes a lot as it warms. When cold, lots of banana on the nose. As it warms, more malt comes through, especially molasses. Flavor is sweet with bready malt, molasses and citrusy yeast. Finishes with citrusy yeast and some hints of roasted malt. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel. Overall, interesting complexity to this. More like a dunkel Weiss, but complex malt.

Very light smell, malty, carbonated, nothing unique behind the up front maltiness, decent

12oz bottle - A really nice, albeit different, beer. Unlike an America Black Ale, which still maintains most of an IPA characteristics, this didn’t maintain many saison characteristics, let alone just a few. This could have been some kind of smoked ale to be quite honest, but it was tasty. Aroma light/medium cofee and a touch of dark chocolate, some soy, a bit earthy but mostly coffee and earthy. Out of left field comes a smokey/peaty flavor, combining with the coffee note (which isn’t very pronounced), some soft spice and a bit of coca-cola thrown in there makes this pretty intriguing. I definitely enjoyed it and look forward to my other 3 bottles.

(Rating #5835)
