Big sweet nose. Candi sugar and raisins. Malty, vinuous sweet with fruity esters. Bit of soy sauce. Belgian strong ale aromas, yeasty and musky. True to style. Vaporous, and really reminds me of Rochefort 8. Cloudy dark amber brown with off-white lacing head. I poured in the lees. Silky heavy body with medium carbonation and alcohol warming. Mellow sweet quaff, for sure. Rife with candi sugar and estery Belgian yeasties. Reminiscent of Rochefort or Chimay. Huge malt sweetness and fruity ester. Just enough bitter to round out the finish. This is probably the best domestic Belgian strong I’ve had to date.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2005 Holy smokes! I’m not sure which trappist they were shooting for here, hints at Roch 10 but I understand this is really a Chimay Blue clone, but IMO its better! And while they didn’t quite give us a sublime, amazingly complex little creatur like Roch 10, they’ve perhaps made the very best Belgian style I’ve ever had from an American brewery. So very soft, juicy, rounded, caramelly fruity malts, perhaps a teeny bit of chocolate, a little coconut, touch of banana and phenol, sweet alcohol finish. Did I say this was soft? Wow! Nice amber-red color, full head gave way quickly, no lacing. Oh, and the mouthfeel was just soft and juicy. Luscious.

hazy brown, thin white head.
aroma: lots of sweet dark fruit, lots of sweet chocolate malt, slight belgian dubbel funkiness, rich and pleasant.
taste:
T1= lots of sweet dark fruit.
T2= lots of sweet chocolate malt, slight belgian dubbel funkiness, stale hops.
T3= slightly dusty, slight metallic dubbel, fairly clean.
Tf= slightly sour (like oud bruin).
very sweet, very belgian, slightly complex, and quite good. only think off to me was a bit too much co2.

Oh WOW!! I smelled it as soon as I popped off the cap. This is by FAR the best Goose Island I’ve tried. Intense, radiant, uplifting flavor. Drinks like runny syrup and my God is it ever smooth! This is coming from a guy that loves hoppy, bitter beers. This is not hoppy at all, even though there is minimal amount of bittering hops that was used for this. Fantastic job all around, need to keep this year around!! Thanks Goose Island!

Bottle @ Goose Island Clybourne: This wasn't on the menu, but after talking with the waitress she had some other beer options and this was one of them. It was served in a wine goblet. The beer pours a cloudy reddish-brown. There was some head from a fast pour, but it was gone fairly rapidly. There was a big, sweet nose: yeasty, bread, some floral, some fruits with plums and raisins being most evident. The taste was initially sweet, with a slightly sour aftertaste. Some fruits and caramel to the taste. This made the traffic jam that I sat in to get there worthwhile!

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2011 This is the first beer that I have tried from this brewer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy chestnut color with a medium sized soapy tan head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma is sweet caramel, date and plum. The flavor is very sweet with sugary caramel, molasses, date, raisin and wood. Long finish with lingering date and caramel. Fairly full bodied. Excellent.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2008 This is one of the BEST AMERICAN micro brewed Belgain Strong Dark Ales. Very similar to Collaboration not Litigation from Avery, and similar to the Belgian brew Chimay Blue or Grand reserve. This is an EXCELLENT perfectly balance brew with a tint of sweet malty goodness with a slight hint of hops!
