From Greg Hall:
"BCS rare, Iím excited. Brewed in 2008, aged for 24 months in 23 year old Pappy Van Winkle Barrels. These are the very best smelling barrels Iíve come across in 18 years of barrel aging beer. Barrels were originally filled with spirit in 1985. We have 50 bourbon barrels aging, it will be a one time bottling, it will not be repeated."

(bottle - 22 oz) This is it. The pinnacle of the Bourbon County series. Weíve tried the others and now are trying the big daddy. Dark black pour with a mound of puffy tan foam. Huge bourbon aroma with a nice roasted note underneath it that lets you know thereís tons of chocolate and roasted malts just waiting for you. When you take your first sip you immediately get the bourbon flavor. Lots of oak and vanilla mixing with that wonderful bourbon flavor that combines with the chocolate and roasted malts to give it almost a creamy flavor and texture. Reminiscent of the original Bourbon County, but worlds smoother. So incredibly smooth and rich. Probably the best barrel aged beer Iíve ever had.

Quite simply the most complicated and delicious beer I have ever had. Is it worth the $45? Yes. Thick like motor oil, pitch black, with a bourbon brown foam head coats the glass with little oily bubbles of wonder . I think every taste bud that I posses was firing...to many wonderful flavors to describe. Aging another bottle for comparison.

Bottle courtesy of JRedmond, bless him. Nose is ridiculously intense... bourbon, vanilla, espresso, heavy malts, woody. Taste is so rich and satisfying... it makes Weasel Beer Geek Brunch look like childsplay. 5.05

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2011 Sampled @ RBWG...not sure who brought this but THANKS!!! Had this side-by-side with all of the Eclipses including PVW and it did more than hold its own. Squid ink with a small chestnut film that quickly slides to the sides forming a ring around the inside of the glass. Smooth and silky bourbon, vanilla, fudge, pudding, bakerís chocolate, dark fruit and oak. You can definitely tell that this has been aged for 2-years and using high caliber bourbon...all of the rich flavors are present without harsh, off, or hot qualities. Extremely complex. Liquid velvet in terms of consistency. World Class!!! BUMP!!!

finally. this beautiful nectar marks my ascendancy the status of beer god. i must say, itís been a glorious journey. so without further ado...here is rating #1000. 22oz bottle, #2378, bottled 11/19/10 courtesy of myself. pours an absolutely gorgeous, velvety black with a smooth, decadent yet delicate mocha brown head that leaves beautiful slivers of lace around the edges. aroma is absolutely stunning, this is a true bourbon drinkers beer, with the most elegant, rich, smooth notes of charred oak, vanilla, toast, and peppery spice that iíve ever experienced backed by dark chocolate, roasty espresso, and lovely earthy notes that are complimented by subtle molasses, graham cracker, and figs with a unique touch of cinnamon-raisin bread as it warms. flavor damn near rendered me thoughtless after the first sip. as i collected myself, one simple word came to my mind...sublime. up front this marvel of a beer presents decadent notes of toasted oak, coconut, vanilla nougat, and the worldís finest bourbon that makes itís presence felt with a spirit-warming heat that is quickly tamed by notes of a world class imperial stout in the form of bittersweet dark chocolate, molasses, and espresso with rich dark fruit notes of fig, date, and plum emerging just ahead of the subtle complexity offered by hints of leather, toffee, maple, and wet earth. palate is smooth as silk, as i imagine the PVW bourbon is, with elegant carbonation and a rich, woody, and slightly dry finish that lasts an eternity and offers a perfect balance of sweetness and heat. overall, iíve had some pretty incredible beers on my journey to #1000, and iíve rated quite a few a perfect 5, but iím not sure that any of them can match the perfect balance of complexity, elegance, and masterful barrel aging of this one. thank you, goose island and cheers to Ratebeer!

Date: September 5, 2011 Mode: Bottle Source: Trade with FullObs, Plainfield, IL Appearance: Opaque jet black, slight amount of tan head and good lacing. Aroma: Chocolate, bourbon, woody and vanilla. Flavor: Consistent with aroma but also some sweet brown sugar or molasses, thick bodied, and a long lasting delicious finish. Other: This was amazing! Had to put my whole beer rating experience under analysis after trying and could not say this was not at the top or near top of its class in every category. Bottled 11/19/2010, bottle 7,324. Shared with BVery which made the experience even better.

Bottle #7324, bottled on 11/19/2010. Huge thanks to my great buddy ryanfolty for brokering & executing the trade that brought this one to us. This is only the 2nd perfect 5 score Iíve ever given to a beer, and I canít think of one damn reason why it isnít deserving. Jet black pour - we held a pretty high intensity flashlight directly behind the glass, and absolutely couldnít see the light coming through. Head was a ring of frothy brown, good lacing/legs, and seemed to coat the glass with a golden sticky hue. Very complex aroma of oak, bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. Rich syrupy palate with good weight on the tongue. Taste was cocoa, bourbon, sweet vanilla, and oak. Alcohol was present but didnít play like 13%. Pretty clean finish for as much as this beer has going on. This is nothing short of genius. And I had this on my 35th birthday - what a perfect birthday treat! Mad props & thanks to the whole Folty family for a wonderful time on my birthday!

I have no encountered a imperial stout yet that stacks up to this. After doing a huge vertical tasting of multiple years of DL, KBS, CBS and many others, this was the hands down winner. The complexity in this beer is unmatched.

12/23/10. Bomber, first taste care of cbfobes, my main man/lady! Solid, opaque pour with a small brown head that settles to a ring but lasts forever. Amazing sweet buttery coconut and vanilla aroma laced with bourbon booze, sweet chocolate, a hint of coffee, and more than I could explain. Ripe sweet chocolate vanilla flavor loaded with more vanilla, coconut, sweet cherries, dark fruits, brown sugar, and more than I can imagine. Silky smooth and simply amazing. This is heaven.

A: Opaque black with a very small ring of head that drifts away almost immediately. S: Super rich fudge/brownie batter. I donít know how else to describe this. Vanilla with some bakers chocolate, great bourbon character on the nose, smells smooth. T: Almost no carbonation and the alcohol (given the ABV) is almost non existent. Toffee, caramel, bourbon, chocolate, roasted char (subtle), maybe even a bit of fruit in there. Super sweet bourbon and vanilla goodness. This is the "creme de la creme" of bourbon county, or any bourbon barrel aged stout for that matter. Simply excellent. M: Very thick and slick, it coats the mouth and sticks around for awhile. Leaves a very nice aftertaste that lingers. O: This is fantastic, and definitely a step up from the regular bourbon county brand stout but I am not sure that the price tag is justified. If I saw this beer on the shelf would I buy it again? YES, and I would save it for a special occasion. A great experience nonetheless!
