I caught this by accident when walking past as they were trying to clear space for the 2:00 tapping of a Saison. If I’d known how good it was I might have come over sooner. This gem is a nice example of what a sour can be. Tart enough to shock the senses but not so intense that it then wears them down it was a nice break from stouts and porters. I hope Goose Island continues to experiment with different versions of Matilda.

Aroma / Appearance - A fruitiness that at first I thought was cherries turns out to be a nice raspberry foundation. The cloudy orange body is murky but not from sediment. Tart and dry it wakes up the nose and forces one to spend a few minutes admiring a well crafted beer.

Flavor / Palate - The taste is similar to the aroma though with a little more kick. This may be due to the glass as much as anything. Whatever the reason I would have definitely asked for another pour if it were still on. At 7.5% ABV it was heavy enough that more would have been deadly but not so high as to kill my desire to want it again. It actually makes me want to go pick up a bottle of Matilda this week.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Pale yellow golden pour. The nose is quite fruity with a kiss of soft horsey funkiness. A touch of light lemon and a flinty minerally character as well. Light pineapple and citrus that enhance the touch of fruit. Bright, crisp and refreshing.

tap @ blind tiger for GI event - hazy pink/orange pour with no head. nice and tart, sweet, clear caramel malts. Spritzy and light. Sweet berries, strawberries and orange, also attribute to fruity lactic character. Almost tastes like a berliner weisse to me. Alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Draft at the Hopcat Goose Island night in Grand Rapids. Thanks to Northernbrews for getting us over to Hopcat for this. Tart and acidic aroma of fruits and funk. Flavor is fruity, buy not noticeably raspberries. Nice tartness. Great beer.

On tap at GTMW. Poured hazy peach with a creamy cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up rich, tart raspberries, white peppery spicage, and grassy notes over a sufficient pale malty base. The flavor had tart raspberries and lemon zest over toasted grains and pale malts.. earthy spices and fragrant floral character from the yeast.. tasty. Tart and refreshing on the palate and well-carbonated.. overall a very enjoyable brew.

GTMW 2009. Poured a hazy orange color with a redish tint. The head was white. Pleasant aroma of red wine, raspberry, and cider vinegar. Light bodied and acidic. The flavors were similar to the aroma; dry red wine, raspberries, and cider vinegar. There was also a bit of wet stone at the end. Delicious.

Goose island was a real winner at GTMW09. Yeast and caramel malts dominated by a wonderfully tart dose of rsspberry. . Faintly sour.

GTMW 2009: Pinkish hue with a fizzy head and some lace. The aroma has notes of tart raspberries, light herbal notes, some caramel and biscuity malts, hint of Belgian yeast esters. The taste starts with a heavy dose of acidic fruit supported by pale malts, earthy and faint herbal spices. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing. A good brew but in the grand scheme of things a rather pedestrian effort.

On tap @ Hop Cat in Grand Rapids. Hazy mauve color, very little head. Lightly fruity aroma, just a hint of tartness. Nice sharp tart start to the taste, mild berry fruitiness in the middle, light sour and refreshing finish. Very good, probably the best of the special GI drafts they had on that night.
