5 ounce sampler glass at the Goose Island Clybourn brewpub. Big aroma of coffee and and cocoa beans in a hot oak kettle. Appearance is a high grade imperial grade: dark brown head, syrupy flow and light swallowing black tint. Flavor in short, is big. I spotted earthiness, molasses, chocolate, and subtly bitter coffee. Palate is heavy bodied, medium carbonation, lingering taste and assertive alcohol levels. Overall, this was my favorite among Goose Island’s wintertime, locally promoted stout lineup. It’s satisfying stuff that’s best in small doses.

Had on tap at Goose Island Clybourn. Served in a snifter.
A: Pours a dark black color with a thin mocha head forming on the pour. Solid retention as it slowly it slowly dissipates leaving soapy splotches of lace down the glass.
S: Nice dark chocolate bitterness with a little bit of espresso and some oat flakes. Not getting the coffee punch I was looking for and it seems rather bland.
T: Nice semi-bitter coffee bean with some sweet milk chocolate. Oat flakes with a roasted malt finish. The taste quickly leaves however leaving a dry, bland finish that turns slightly mineral-like as it warms.
M: Pretty easy drinking. The menu said 10% as opposed to the 8% listed here, but this drinks much more like 8% unless the booze is extremely well hidden. Medium bodied with a medium carbonation level.
O: The tastes were good up front, but the finish left much to be desired and really didn’t draw me back in to try more. It was an OK beer, and while being far from bad I wouldn’t want to revisit in the future.

I had this on cask at the brewery. Phenomenal beer. Super smooth roasty stout that goes down too easily. Compared to the normal kegged version, the casked option is untouchable.

Deep black with a small dark brown head. Aroma is huge on the coffee with other notes of roasted chocolate, but mostly coffee. Flavor is huge on the coffee, it almost completely masks everything else. Hints of cream, light chocolate, and nutty malts. Extremely bitter finish.

On tap at brewpub. Pours black with small light tan head. Aromas of coffee and some roast. Flavors of coffee, some roast, and bit of dark chocolate. Finishes with some coffee bitterness. Body is a little thin, but that seems to work with coffee stouts. Solid.
