Commercial Description:
Our brewer was intrigued while looking through the World Beer Cup style guidelines. Category 50A: Belgian-Style Table Beer - Pale to dark brown in color, light bodied with a relatively low carbonation and limited aftertaste; hops to provide balance; 0.5-3.5% ABV. The name Six (pronounced "cease") is the starting gravity of the beer. And coincidentally our pub brewer just celebrated his 6th anniversary here at LPB.

On tap. Nut brown color, low carbonation, nary a head. Black pepper, slight clove & caramel, mild fruitiness. Very thin bodied. Taste is mildly nutty with mild black pepper and a very quaint fruitiness. I think the brewer hit the style on this one, but the style is just not very interesting, it is hard to be with such a small gravity beer.

Draft at Clybourn. Copper to amber color with a small of-white head. Malt and dark caramel in the aromas. Toasted dry malt flavors. A barley tea quality. A real session brew.

On tap at the Clyborne brewpub. The body was dark brown and copper with a white head. The aroma was caramel and pancakes. Fairly earthy with some black tea notes. The taste was strongly black tea, but then behind that you get some toffee and roasted notes. There was also some dirty fresh lettuce. An interesting beer for sure.

Interesting beer. My girlfriend ordered it and I got to try some. Pours a dark brown. Really surprised to see a 2.5% beer on the menu and was curious to see what it actually tasted like. Obviously it was thin and watery, but it still wasn’t that bad. Some nice malt flavor and it seems to have some pepper in it...or it was a little smokey. Interesting.

On tap at Goose – Clybourn. Poured hazy medium peach with about zero head sticking around. The aroma picked up sweet pale malts and faint fruits with light dusty hay and wheaty notes.. more pale malt and the slightest prickle of pepper with warmth. The flavor had light, tacky paler malts paired with a bit of caramel and honey for sweetness.. light bitterness around that was primarily grassy.. short finish that was pleasant enough. Light-bodied and dry on the palate with higher carbonation.. didn’t do much for me.

In short: A surprisingly satisfying 2.5% Ale
How: Tap at brewpub (Clybourn location)
The look: Almost clear light brown body with almost no head.
In long: Surprising body for a 2.5% beer. I know of many 5% beer with a thinner more watery body. Actually about half the 5% beers I know have a thinner body. Malt profile has a whole wheat breakfast cereals flavour with some nuts. The comes just the right amount of dry leafy hops. Finish is mildly bitter and a bit nutty. I don’t know about the Belgian style from the description, if I had to guess I would have said English Bitter. I went through my pint in about 5 minutes. This thing would be killer on cask. Given it’s extra-low abv and the fact that it is only available on tap in the land of the bigger-is-better I expect pretty low ratings for this superb session beer. However I for one haven’t wished that much to get another Six since that strip-poker night when I had 2 fours and 2 sixes and Alexandra was down to her bra and panties… I didn’t get that other six, she had a straight and everybody laughed at my Homer Simpsons boxer shorts.
