2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: FEB 23, 2014 Bottle: thanks, Jeff! Deep, deep brown color, almost completely opaque; foamy beige head that settles to a weak film quickly. Aroma is some ashy & herbal hops atop a caramel & toffee malt background. Taste is a little spiced; mild cinnamon perhaps, with some white pepper. Ashy & leafy hops, with sweet caramel, toffee, & light toasted malts underneath. Gets more toasty with time, perhaps with a touch of dark fig sweetness. Lasting bitter aftertaste. Slight acetone with warmth. Kind of a messy brew, but still not bad. Merely okay.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled on 10/23/13, drunk on 7/25/14.
Pours a ruddy, deep auburn topped by a difficult to coax, light-tan head. It does end up sticking around a bit. Clarity is high though; very lightly filtered.
I will admit to this not smelling like much. By no means is this poor in the aroma category, the nose just dosent do it justice. It’s quite malty, smells slight caramelized or richly maris otter-like. Whatever the case, they got one hell of an extraction from the malt. But yet there is a dry, burnt chocolate-like note that keeps it from being overpowering. In fact, it never seems even slightly strong.
The first sip is slightly sweet. Yep theres a lot of high gravity wort and it comes through, even though it’s not alcoholic or overdone. What does emerge and quickly, is a cherry almost brett. lambicus-like tartness. No idea where this comes from, if its just very light bacteria emanating from the malt, but it’s absolutely stunning. Vanilla and very light wine-skin flavors signify a true sour-like end. Delicious. Hard to believe this was exactly intended but delicious none the same.

1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.
Appearance: It has a hazy brownish mahogany color with a tall slow fading head on top. This head is creamy light tan in color makes cool lacing on the glass.
Smell: The aroma is an odd mix of overly sweet malt, spices, hops and orange peel.
Taste / Palate: Just the the aroma the taste is an odd mix up of flavors. I get a heavy sweetness from the malt with notes of brown sugar, sweet bread and molasses. This is cut with harsh orange rind/pith like bitterness and spice. To me nothing is working well with each other and I ended up drain pouring the last half of this beer.

Appearance of muddy iced tea. Aroma of a barley wine... sweet malt. Taste is smooth, with a hint of ’wild’.... maybe a touch of straw. A little thin. It’s not great, but not bad.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Brown with a slight hint of red. This is sort of a strong brown ale with a hint of cranberry. Decent stuff. But where this one really shines is in the price. I got a case at costco for something like $23. 8% beer for a buck a bottle? And brewed at Chicago Goose. Sign me up.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A clear dark ruby-red pour, topped by a mostly diminishing sand-colored head. Refined sweet nutty malts hit the nose at first. Then some fine tones of dark dried fruits, toffee, hops, and English licorice. Medium full. Light sparkling mouthfeel. Taste is sourish-sweet, with nutty malts, mild roast, dark dried fruits and some coffee tones. Good balancing bitterness with soil and citrus. Finishes on the lighter sweet malty side, along with a lingering bitterness. A pretty good one. [From a 12 fl oz bottle]
