COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

2010 vintage, bottled Nov 19, 2010. 650 mL bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, served in a tulip. Pours hazy straw-golden with a medium, dense white head and champagne carbonation. The head remains and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of coriander, orange, banana, lemon, oak, flowers, pepper, pale malts and yeast. The flavour is dry and a bit sour with a touch of acidity. It has citric notes, spice, a touch of vanilla and some hops. The finish is long and citrusy-peppery. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, creamy texture and lively carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice saison with a delicate citrusy character. Bright and floral, it is refreshing yet moderately complex. 2011-05-11

Golden in color, with barnyard funk and a strong sour note that glides above orange peel citrus and white pepper spice. Nicely done.

Tasted 5-10-2011 at home from bottle. 2011 Vintage drank young. Aroma: Classic wild yeast exciting nose. Musty nose transitions to savory spices with citrusy orange everpresent. Also a bit of bubblegum sweetness present for me. Appearance: Slight haze with the bottle conditioning. Pours a muted yellow apricoty color with head that disappears surprisingly fast for a bottle conditioned beer. Taste: Nice sweetness present at the start offset by the mustiness. Orange peel dominates the mid-palate while the beer transitions to a bubble gum and estery finish. There is also the oaking "vanilla" supporting the alcohol and tampening down some of the rough edges. Palate: Nice effervescence present throughout bringing the delicate volatiles to the fore. Overall: Surprisingly restrained. Classic saison with a moderate to restrained yeast character (at least for a belgian). Extremely enjoyable.

Pours a murky apricot yellow with a head of tightly packed bubbles that quickly dissipate into a thin foam. It’s an appearance that I would normally rate lower but the consistent champagne like effervescence catches the eye... Apricot, caramel, floral, and citrus aromas dominate with notes of herbs, cheese, alcohol, banana, bubblegum, butterscotch, and vanilla. For me the aroma is the high point of this brew. Tastes way too sour and salty for me with a weird oily finish... First impressions lead to disappointment.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange, thin white head, spotty lacing. Nose is soapy, with peach, light funk, some salt, some bacon, quite pretty. Flavours of spice, citrus, some funk and cheese, very tasty. Solid Saison. Great stuff!

Bottle at Dark Lord Day. Thanks for the share. Light golden yellow with no head. Very floral, fruity with kind of a thick body. Overall very well done. Would like to try again.

Bottle courtesy of Styles. Pours a hazy yellow, with a huge white head. Aroma is peppery, with citrus, and a nice brett character. Body is light & crisp. Flavor is candied fruit, with spices, and a little brett in the finish. Very nice.

Got it from the bottle. The carbonation was very bright which I liked. It doesn’t actually say its a Saison (which is typical for Goose Island) but it sure tastes like one. It had enough hops that it was clearly American but not over the top like many of the West Coast brews. It was very versatile and floral. Definitely a fav. It’s really too bad it was purchased by Anheuser-Busch. Hopefully it will merely effect distribution and price and not quality.
