Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

Poured into a chalice. Immediate aromas of citrus and yeast typical of belgians. I thought the taste was good but the aftertaste was off for belgians. It had a bitter/hoppy taste typical of IPAs. Memorable but I’d say it’s not true to the style.

750ml bottle: This one pours a pale, straw yellow color. There was a huge frothy white head on it that didn’t linger long, nor did it leave any lacing. Nose is mainly peppery and coriander. Some citrus also. The taste is very good. Somewhat lighter body, but very flavorful. Some wheat notes, coriander and peppery notes, and some citrus, just like the nose. Subtle, yet a bit complex and very tasty. I will definitely have another.

Bottle:   Dirty straw, hint of gold, large rocky white head, falls quickly, spotty lacing.   Pale floral and citrus nose.   A little bit of straw and mealiness.   Smells decent for an American made Saison.   More barnish and musty on the tongue than the nose suggests.   Not all that mealy, not spritzy or bubbley either.   Semi-sweet, a bit grassy on the backside, smidgen of lemon.   Still remains a little musty and barnish.   Body and mouthfeel are actually quite good, not bubbley but its smooth.   This one was pretty flavorful from start to end.   Probably one of the better American examples that I have had.   Thanks Kevin for this one!

June 18, 2010. 22oz bottle shared by blankboy with me, gregclow, jerc & mabel. Hazy pale yellow pour with a smallish white head. Mouth-watering aroma - lemon, spice, sweet malt, some lactic sourness, grassy bitterness, alcohol - a lot going on!! The taste delivered, add in coriander bitterness, sour funk, fruity green apple crispness - damned nice. Thick, lively mouthfeel, acidic, dry, tart and spicy in the long, shifting, fairly complex finish - really, really good stuff.

Tap at Sunset Grill in Boston. Hazy yellow pour with a foamy head. A subtle but delicious beer with notes of peppery spice, yeasty bread, tart fruit and wood, a bit of sweet vanilla, and some nice citrus hop presence on both the nose and the tongue. Palate is soft, supple, dry, and drinkable. Not aggressive, but well crafted and tasty.

Great aroma, scents of green apples and tart citrus. The appearance a faded gold, cloudy with a small egg white head. The taste comes on very tart at first, with citrus flavors of apple, orange peels, and mild vanilla. It’s a light sour, with little bitterness. More tart than it is sweet. The palate is light and tickling. This beer has a very mild fizz with thin texture coming to a light puckery finish.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2014 Bottle brought back at Christmas from Andersons in Toledo. Aroma is soft lemon, straw and light spices. Tastes are the orange peel, pepper, barnyard funk, wood and bread. Crazy good texture. Nice surprise - excellent brew. Right up there with the best saisons I’ve tried.
