Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

Yellow color with lots of particulate floating, small white head and white lacing. Smell of lemon, tart malt and orange. It has a complex flavor of citrus and sour, almost like an artisinal ale. this beer seems to be a more flavorful and complex belgian ale. Do not fruit this beer.

Pours a clear orange with a finger of stark white head. Slight sour malt notes in the odor. Tart flavor to it with a bit of a sharp aftertaste.

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2012 A very special beer that everyone should at least try. I immediately fell in love with the aroma. It was citrusy, yeasty, with a huge fruity character. The taste is dominated by sour orange peel throughout and it culminates with a very yeasty feel. Carbonation is very light, I’d call it sparkly, and the 6.5% ABV is formidably well concealed. It also has this wine-like feel to it. I liked it very much.

Having to drink non-IPA’s like this because that is what the old lady prefers, but might as well rate them. I try all of her wheat/white/saison/hef, etc. beers that she prefers. This one was pretty tasty actually. banana, vanilla, golden, clear, minimal head, light sweetness, light body.

Not sure why it happens, but this is a beer I have drank a lot of starting with the early versions at GTMW. Point is, I love this beer. The current bottle is a 22oz that is 11mo’s old. Most of the ones that I have had were 4 packs with a little less age on them. This beer is nice fresh and really nice with a bit of age on it. Yeasty, fruity, bretty aroma with a touch of wood. Taste is moderately dry with a nice tartness and flavors of candi sugar, pils malt, hosreseblanket, citrus and vanilla. I was thinking the other day that I am always so sad when I run out of this, it as nearly a perfect beer for all occasions.

2010 vintage, bottled Nov 19, 2010. 650 mL bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, served in a tulip. Pours hazy straw-golden with a medium, dense white head and champagne carbonation. The head remains and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of coriander, orange, banana, lemon, oak, flowers, pepper, pale malts and yeast. The flavour is dry and a bit sour with a touch of acidity. It has citric notes, spice, a touch of vanilla and some hops. The finish is long and citrusy-peppery. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, creamy texture and lively carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice saison with a delicate citrusy character. Bright and floral, it is refreshing yet moderately complex. 2011-05-11

Golden in color, with barnyard funk and a strong sour note that glides above orange peel citrus and white pepper spice. Nicely done.

Tasted 5-10-2011 at home from bottle. 2011 Vintage drank young. Aroma: Classic wild yeast exciting nose. Musty nose transitions to savory spices with citrusy orange everpresent. Also a bit of bubblegum sweetness present for me. Appearance: Slight haze with the bottle conditioning. Pours a muted yellow apricoty color with head that disappears surprisingly fast for a bottle conditioned beer. Taste: Nice sweetness present at the start offset by the mustiness. Orange peel dominates the mid-palate while the beer transitions to a bubble gum and estery finish. There is also the oaking "vanilla" supporting the alcohol and tampening down some of the rough edges. Palate: Nice effervescence present throughout bringing the delicate volatiles to the fore. Overall: Surprisingly restrained. Classic saison with a moderate to restrained yeast character (at least for a belgian). Extremely enjoyable.
