Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

Pours a golden amber with a nice head. Smells of yeast, orange, bubblegum and a funky spice aroma I can’t put my finger on. Medium mouthfeel with a dry yeasty barnyard palate that does remind me of a dry champagne. Follows up with a mild pepper bitter that works in to a bitter orange peel note. Not bad at all with easy drinkability. Great summer beer.

UPDATED: JUN 11, 2011 22 oz bottle. Pours pale yellow with large foamy head. Highly carbonated...latter pours create a dance of bubbles and sediment. Yeasty aroma with hints of citrus. Very dry in the mouth with a not-so-subtle taste of wine/alcohol. Very drinkable.

[Tap] Pours a very pale yellow color with no head. Fizzy carbonation made this beer look more like a sparkling wine. Aroma of champagne yeasts, apples and tart grapes. Tastes a bit like a cider, with apple and light spices throughout. Barnyard notes are light and come out primarily in the finish. Highly carbonated and solid body. An interesting brew, but not really my style.

Bottle. Moderate aromas all around, with light bread and grain for the malt, lemon and herbs for the hops, musty for the yeast, with hints of white win, berry, sour apple and wood in the background. Head is huge, frothy/rocky, white with good crispy lacing and is fully lasting. Color is clear gold, but hazes up on the last pour. Flavor starts lightly sweet and acidic, then finishes faintly sweet and acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a lively carbonation. A nice lively aroma, but a little light in the flavor, this is still a very good Saison.

On tap at the brewpub in Chicago. Hazy pale yellow. Aroma is perfumey lychee, gooseberry, with acetic undertones. Lightly yeasty and tart, with lovely lychee and berry fruit, soft subtle spices. Absolutely fantastic!

650 mL bottle. Hazy yellow-gold with a nice white head. Appealing aroma has dried orange and apple skins, wild yeast, and a little graininess. Theflavour is fairly subtle, with neutral/tart citrus, wheat malt, and a hint of wood. Quite dry, but no metallic notes. Highly carbonated. A well constructed beer, but one which doesn’t greatly appeal to me.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Poured as a glowing yellow hue with a tint of white and a minimum amount of haze sediment floating about. Tiny formation of head while the aroma holds a zesty dosage of spiced yeast in a typical Belgian fashion. The flavor is close to the aroma with a strong serving of zesty yeast with dashes of spice such as clove and coriander and a noticeable orange peel that taste more authentic then some other saisons being made in the USA. This reminded me to appreciate the saison style because lately I had tasted some boring ones that made me want to steer away from them.

Brewed in the USA !!! Courtesy of AFI96..Thanks Waylo. Pours a hazy yellow color with a very small white head. Aroma of sour white grapes, lemon peels and some barnyard funk. Taste is also kind of funky with some mild spices, wheat, yeast and cloves. Mouthfeel has a slight bite on the tongue when you first sip this saison yet it doesn’t finish in the same manner.

22oz bottle, dated 1/29/10, courtesy of daknole. thanks, dak! pours a beautiful, pale yellow-gold with a thick, bubbly, bright white head leaving a tight ring of lace. aroma is fantastic with sweet fruit notes of pear, green apple, kiwi, and tangerine backed by floral white wine, oak, and belgian yeast with a perfect blend of white pepper, coriander, and clove and just a touch of lemon grass and funky, wild brett. flavor is delicious as well with the smooth notes of oak, vanilla, and white wine coming to the forefront ahead of the fruit notes of orange peel, berry, and apricot with a blend of cinnamon, clove, and sage adding a unique spice element just before the slightly tart, dry, funky finish. palate is medium bodied with dense carbonation making it almost creamy on the palate with a dry, herbal finish. overall, an absolutely wonderful saison and definitely a pleasant surprise.
