Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

I have a bottle of this in the cellar at home but free trumps having to take a risk any day. Now that I know what I will discover it might get opened this month. An excellent saison the result of Goose Island’s work is a fine summery beer that helps beat the heat. If it has a weakness that would be the champagne like aspects. Because of the carbonation this would take some time to work through.

Aroma / Appearance - Golden blond and crisp the head formed a white halo around the edges of the glass. Lemon pledge, citrus, and orange glo give it a warm nature. Overall it kind of smells like a corn field after a heavy rain with the sun shining through partly cloudy skies.

Flavor / Palate - Orange zest, lemon peels, and a minor tartness perform their jobs well. The peppery kick is so subtle that it does not sneak up until the very end. The carbonation in the mouthfeel can be a little much. Overall I would have paid $4 for a pint of this and not been let down by the result. Once again Goose Island proves they can play with the big dogs and hold their own.

Not a fan of Saisons at this point. So maybe my rating is biased. Its a beer of strong characer and spicieness, Im just not a fan of the flavor.

A nice golden-yellow pour. A light aroma of citrus and lemon. Smooth texture with a light body. The finish is clean and slightly tart. Some fruit juice characteristics.

Awesome golden color with a head that will not quit. Took me forever just to pour it. Some fingernail polish notes, orange peel, cloves, and maybe even some hoppiness in the back. A good beer.

12 oz bottle shared by willblake. Poured a golden body with a hazy bright white medium fluffy head. Aroma of yeast, hint of mint, corriander, bubble gum and tropical fruit. Medium mouth feel with average carbonation. Flavors of yeast, grains, rotting oranges, grass and a touch of earth.

Tricked. With all the wheat in this I thought it was a Belgian wit with fruit. Cloudy yellow appearance. Some wheat up front; a bit of fruit later, fairly wheaty. Quite zesty and light, almost fizzy. Good but not worth $9 to me.

Bomber brought over to Leems’ house by our friend CRK. Hazy yellow colored with a thin, bone white head. Aroma was bits of yeast and citrus fruits, particularly lemons. Perhaps a little orange and pear thrown in there as well. This beer tasted very sweet, lots of citrus fruits, roses, light bit of earthiness and some definite pepper notes at the finish. Unique tasting brew, and quite tasty.

bottle: golden orange pour, grassy, spicey arouma. Velvety soft and smooth body, funky with a touch of tart with sharp carbonation. Touch of lemon and flowers, nectar honey. Yeasty, light caramel and cracker malts, peppery finish. Lovely spice.
