Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

Bottle from miketd, thanks man! Poured a clear, pale yellow color with an inch and a half thick, frothy white head that slowly receded to a thin layer and left some spotty lacing. Light, crisp maltiness with hints of hay, a soft barnyard yeastiness presenting some light phenols (bubble gum and band aid), soft, dry citrus fruit (orange peel and tangerine), and some light oak on the nose. Crisp, lightly tart entry with soft hints of white grapes that transitions into a clean maltiness with some hay and light cereal leading into a lightly dry yeastiness with undertones of pepper, orange peel, and grape skin that linger into the finish where they are paired with a distinct wine barrel oakiness that imparts a nice dryness. Fine, tight carbonation and light body combine to create a crisp mouth feel. Overall, this wasnít what I would call a real traditional saison/wild ale, but it was pretty tasty and a pleasure to drink. Thanks again Mike.

Pours a two finger white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Good carbonation and light-medium bodied. Cloudy light yellow color. Nose is citrus. Flavor is sweet and sour citrus, hints of yeast. Good summer beer. Bottled 12/11/2009. $8.45 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, MA.

22 oz bottle, dated 2/19/10 1313. Pours crystal clear golden with a very nice white head that retains very well, leaving some nice lace work behind. The aroma is peppery, spice, malt. The flavor is sweet, malty, bread, spices and yeast. Finish is peppery and bitter. Overall a very nice beer.

Aroma is spicy Belgian/golden ale. Nice citrus hop balance. Fresh orange peel. A tad grassy, especially when agitated. Appears golden yellow, hazy with lots of fizz. Italian ice lacing, not much of it. Nice color but not much body. Flavor is grassy lemon citrus and orange. Full of nice, sweet (but not too sweet) spring-y flavors. Green apple and white wine champagne. Feels fizzy and bubbly on the palage. Creamy; dances on the tongue. Somewhat ashy finish. Crackles like cereal. Dry wine finish. Itís dry, fizzy, sweet and grassy overall. A nice summery brew.

Batch #1323 - bottled on 2/19/10 - Aroma is floral hop, a little basement, fruits and a little brett. Flavor is citrus, with some herbs. Finishes clean. I am liking GIís Belgians.

Bottled 02-10. The pour is very nice with a very hazy, straw color and an average, white, very frothy head which leaves a small layer throughout and leaves lots of frothy lace. The nose is a bit off and a bit bland; the orange is apparent either from the orange peel or the wild yeast, a slight barnyard hint, some floral, light white pepper, and bit of corn also. The flavor is better with minimal corn notes, vanilla really does filter in nicely, white pepper, subtle orange notes, a bit vinous. The palate is lively, creamy, medium. It finishes with just a touch of dryness, orange keeping its presence, vanilla still, and pepper lingering. Odd beer, and not what I would consider to be a saison; it lacks the tartness, it is sweeter and less bitter, and lacks a refreshing character to it. It is, however, like a Belgian Blond and fairly well done. The wine barrel aging is minimally apparent, and the wild yeast notes are very subtle. Nice but not great.

22 oz bottle, dated 2/19/10. Pours a hazy straw yellow with a smallish creamy white head that retains well and leaves a lot of lacing. Thereís lots of tiny little floaties suspended.

The aroma is peppery spices and some musty yeast with a little banana.

The flavor is sweet bready malts, with some spices and earthy yeast and a little banana. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lots of spritzy carbonation that subsides some as it sits.

Overall, a nice saison. A little too sweet and too much banana for me.

Bomber from South Bay Drug. Joey da man. Pours very hazy gold with a decent white head. Aromas of fresh citrus and light yeast. Medium body with sharpish carbonation. Flavor is citrus zest and lots of peppery hot bits. And itís like fresh fruit. That pepper bit hangs on into the finish. Or maybe thatís the zest. Very good, whichever. After awhile thereís a light funkiness, and something like an oaky astringency. Really good stuff.
