COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2011 Re-rate 1/8/11. 2010 bottle. I liked this so much the first time I had it (2009 version, I believe) I picked up another bottle while traveling. Big booming white head on top of a slightly hazy golden body. I pick up much more white wine character this go around. Citrus, lemon, and flowery notes mix in with light spice, yeast, and wood. Light-bodied, dry, with a bit of tart funk. Very clean. I’m suprised how much better this is than Matilda. Original Rating: Bottle from brewblackhole. Thanks Tom! Yellowish color, pours a thick fluffy off-white head with pretty good retention. Orange peel, lemon, wood, yeast and cloves in a pleasant aroma. Very clean and refreshing. Flavor adds pepper and citrus which mixes nicely with the clove and yeast. Simple but very tasty. Also, the label really fits this beer. No bells and whistles, clean, and elegant.

Pours hazy yellow with a small white head. Smells of lemon, some wheat, and clove. Tastes of lemon, lemon zest, pepper, grass, and coriander. Nicely seasoned, crisp, yet creamy smooth, and very refreshing.

Pours a hazy light yellow with a large easily excitable white head. The aroma is Belgian yeast, with some light citrus and a hint of funk. The flavor has lots of banana, with lemon zest, barnyard, and some vanilla I only picked out because I was looking for it. Light body with soft carbonation and a dry slightly tart, almost bretty finish. Very satisfying and refreshing.

This beer is gorgeous. a cloudy lemon yellow with sediment drifting about under a crisp foamy white head. A dry, mildly spiced aroma dominated by yeast with a faint floral or citrus character. The body is similarly dry, almost parching. A little of that sweet character in the finish, which was very dry. This is the best saison I’ve tried in years. Worthy of being served next to some duponts.

Pale orange golden, slightly hazed. Foamy head is mostly diminishing and leaves only a small amount of lace. Nose is yeasty, slightly sulfurous w/ a hint of citrus which reminds me of American hops but is probably on account of the orange peel. It’s this flavor and the delicate mouthfeel that really drive the beer. Very light in texture w/ very vigorous but soft carbonation. Orange, lemon and a bit of cloves and vanilla. That the nose has that strange sulfur note in the nose is really unfortunate. It is truly distracting from what otherwise is a very elegant, well-balanced and unique beer.

Pale yellow-grey pour with a diminishing off-white head and ample lacing. Nose offers a corn-like graininess along with citrus blossoms and light coriander spicing. Flavor reflects the nose and adds a sweet-tart mandarin orange flavor to go along with the smooth, creamy, vanilla-tinged finish. Mouthfeel is full of soft carbonation which marries beautifully with the lightly nuanced and refreshing nature of the brew. As a ’side note’, the bottle artwork is simple but magnificently elegant. Interesting, fun, and worth trying ... like the most demure, polite, and unimposing saison. "Sophie" would be a classy date ... deceptively ’fragile’, with a beautiful mind, and a gorgeous smile.
