One of our oldest brews, Special Brown makes its yearly appearance again. Strong and sweet, brewed with 2-row, Munich, Victory, and two types of caramel malts and lightly bittered with Challenger hops. A luciously sweet brew. Special Brown is an agreeable pint.

TAR (2676) - Marshall (Asheville area), North Carolina, USA - JAN 6, 2003
Cask: Deep auburn liquid paired with a sticky off tan foam. Firm, toffeeish palate. Wonderful aroma showing light notes of coffee, bread, butter, spicy hops, and almonds, which are smothered by toffee. Front flavors are loaded with nutty goodness and caramel. Ideal finish, which is very balanced, accompanied by subtle grapefruit sweetness, spicy hop profile, and back to more nuttiness. Amazingly, this manages to show unbelievable complexity and refinement without showing any Porter characteristics whatsoever.

Cask: reddish brown with a hint of purple. A large frothy foam stuck to the top of the beer and all around the glass. Malty aroma was full at the start and then strangely diminished into fine whisps; when available contained caramel, raisins, and an earthy deep woods treat. Flavours were well combined and included toasted bread lathered with butter, some walnuts, and a tasty bitterness in the finish. Nice on cask - good temperature for the flavours to come out.

A small, tan head is very fizzy above a deep mahogany body (that matched the bar), with carbonation equally evident within. There is an initial light touch of hops in the aroma followed by whisky and a sharp lemon bite. Malts take a backseat until the flavor, where they are revealed with a wicked-potency. This fades slowly to simple tea-bitters. With a lively mouthfeel it’s rather sharp & crisp for such a malty brew.

Sampled on Cask at GI Clybourne
This beer is a full brown color, and it is topped by a frothy tan colored head. The aromas is lightly roasty with notes of coffee, caramel, and a hint of burnt fruit. The taste is sweet, with a malty fullness to it that is quite nice. I also get notes of brandy, cherries, alcohol, rum and caramel. This beer is so soft and creamy, with a low carbonation to it. This is definitely a great beer to have on cask, it seems to soften it and make it all that much more quaffable. This is tasty and I am quite enjoying the glass of beer that I was poured.

I had this at the Clybourne and i got the regular nut brown and this to see if i could tell the difference. truth is no. The regular nut brown was darker and was more creamier. Maybe was more nutty in aroma. Other than the extra alcohol there is no reason to spend the extra dollar on a pint of this.

pretty good. red/brown appearance with a decent head. flavors start sweet with nut caramel and toffee. as it finishes the flavors become more grainy/bready. a strong brown ale, but not exceedingly exciting.

Red/Copper/Brown color with a decent head. Flavors start sweet with nut caramel and toffee. As it finishes the flavors become more grainy/bready. A strong brown ale, but not exceedingly exciting.

On tap at Goose Island - Clybourn. Poured deep, hazy reddish-brown with a short yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up dark fruits, caramel, and chocolate with a deeply-rooted, clearly evident alcohol presence.. came across quite brash. The flavor had sweet drawn caramel and brown sugar at the core laced with raw grainy alcohol.. the same sweetness found the finish, as did the booziness that marred my enjoyment of the beer. Medium-bodied on the palate with lower carbonation.. too much sharpness.

Draft at Clybourn brewpub. Poured hazy dark brown color with medium off-white fizzy head that diminished slowly with good lacing. Medium brown sugar aroma. Medium body with light carbonation. Medium balanced sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Sweet drinkable brew.
