(Draught) Pours a black body with a medium tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, grain, brewery, light citrus, and pine. Flavor of roasted malt, chocolate, grass, caramel, and pine with a moderately bitter finish. Nicely balanced.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at the Clybourn location. Pours (guess what?) black with a thin beige head and a treacle aroma. Starts like a porter, finishes like an IPA. There is a hearty dark malt flavor with an intensely bitter hop finish. The net result is good balance and a great taste.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at GTMW. Poured deep amber with a dense beige head. The aroma picked up sage and dry white peppery notes over sweet pale malts.. excellent balance. The flavor found sweet fruity notes, caramel, and a touch of honey at the core.. quite bitter on the edges with earth and pine leading.. sage and peppery notes accented again.. warm, memorable, finish. On the sweet side overall on the palate, but I very much enjoyed the spice usage. Looking at the description, I’m not sure where I got the spices, but I know I had the beer. Excellent stuff!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled at the RB: Warrenville Pop Malt Liquor Event (Warrenville, IL). Darker brown well hazed, decent light brown head laces well, dies to a frothy solid ring. Aromas are roasty and cocoa, light sweetness, coffee, florals and pine. Medium bodied, sweet and decent roastiness, florals and grass. A nice ipa, a bit smaller than advertised and not as hoppy as I’d have expected. The sweetness combats, the roast isn’t too strong, as I’d like more from it and the piney type hops. Not bad, just lacking a bit for me from a desired Imperial beer in the flavor department. Chocolately of course, but I’d personally like some more hop bitterness and roast to boot. Pretty good overall, just not a beer I’d take over several other Black IPAs I’ve had.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
sampled very fresh from the tap at cly. p almost black off white head nose has a big
piney hop aroma with dark fruit and chocolate hint of smoke
undertones. Hop profile reminds me a lot of night stalker, fl is odd
the lack of bitterness is deafening at first as the sweet cocoa and
coffee with big creamy mouthfeel hits heavy, cocoa and dark coffee
roast, piney hop flavors, malts are rather astringent at first but I
got used to it quick and even the bitterness started hitting me big.
long finish. At first I thought this was messy not bitter enough and
the body is too full but I really got used to it and thought of it
just as a smaller night stalker. Some sips have smooth piney hop
flavors like night stalker - really a smaller version of night
stalker. Wow this is actually really good. 8/4/8/4/16

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft at Clybourn. Kind of shocked that GI made one, in all honesty. But, it was pretty damn good. Pours an obvious black with pale tan head. Nose is full of resin and pine, some nice tropical fruit notes as well. Very much about the hops. On taste, there is a light caramel note and the bitterness is quite restrained. Very refined take on the style, which makes sense. I don’t think I’ve every had an over the top bitter beer from GI and this is no exception. Well thought out and perfectly executed. Very nice.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Part of a sampler at goose island clybourn... Pours a dark brown almost black stouty pour with a decadent creamy off-white head.... Piney citrus hops hits the nose initially which almost resembles nightstalker to some degree with its hop profile... Flavors take a turn from what the aroma had offered up with more of an emphasis on the roasted chocolate malt but the piney citrus hops do indeed surface. Bitter pithiness in the finish. Nice beer with a smooth creamy palate albeit just a touch thin.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
nearly black w/ red notes full tan head. Nice hoppy aroma hints of tropical fruits not a lot of roast in the aroma but it’s there. Full well coated palate. Lightly creamy some chocolate in the aftertaste reminds me of a bigger (and better) black sun w/ lots of bitter hops in front lots of good roast notes come through. Delicious.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours an opaque amber brown with thick frothy tan head. Aroma is a mix of nut, vanilla, bready malts. Flavor is nutty raisin and alcohol. Body is light with quite a bit of carbonation for a cask.
