3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Brewers face two common potential pitfalls with the kolsch style. Some understand that its supposed to be light and refreshing and basically wind up brewing a tasteless Miller Lite type concoction at a higher price with more calories. Others say "Hey, we’re brewing craft beer here" and make the beer too malt or hops heavy for the style. Goose Island gets this about right- it tastes very light and refreshing, but has a definite beer taste to it, with some lemon, grape, and grassy notes in the aftertaste. I almost wrote down "sunshine" as a taste descriptor, but obviously that’s not right. It does really taste evocative of the summer season in ways that are hard to quantify. I think this might be the best mass market summer seasonal out there right now. At a time where many are either getting it wrong in some ways, or packing it in and brewing hard lemonadesque Shandys, Goose Island is getting it right. I’ve had a summer only beer or two in the past that were better, but they’ve been discontinued, leaving Goose Island on a perch all its own. You could say their nest rules the summer seasonal roost right now. ;)

Clean and refreshing summer beer but the almost complete lack of flavor is disappointing. Smooth with some light astringency

Pours a goldne yellow from a 12oz bottle with a thin white head. Aroma is malty yeast, citrus and grass. Taste lemony, yeasty, and herbal hops. Crisp long and semi-dry finish.

Bottle from The Beer Cellar January 2014. Pleasant enough without being off the chart. Pale and thin to look at but not as thin in the mouth as expected.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Its body has a light yellow gold color with great clarity. On top of the body is a small white creamy head. The head fades fast and makes only a very little slick lacing. The aroma has nice sweet bready notes with delicate fruity esters. I get notes of peach, banana and white grape. I get all the same delicate fruitiness and mellow bready sweetness in the flavor as I did in the aroma. This light bodied beer has mild carbonation and a smooth light texture which is quite quaffable.

Drought. Golden yellow with foamy off-white head that dissipates quickly, slight floral aroma, low carbonation, thin body, medium finish. Quite easy to drink, a real summertime beer.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a clear golden color with white head. Cereal grain mostly on the nose, not much else; follows onto the palate. Light and crisp, but not a ton of flavor.

1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Very generic summer ale. Not much flavor going on here. How funky is your chicken how loose is your goose? This goose is not totally loose.

12oz bottle 6/03 (Old Notes)-Pours golden with a nice size white head. Aroma of malt, citrus, and hops. Taste of the same with a bit more hops. This light bodied brew is not bad but not my favorite style.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a hazy yet somewhat clear golden body that yields a small white one finger head that dies within a minute. No lacing is seen and carbonation sporadicly rises.
The smell had some malts and hops balanced very well. Some lemon and grassy notes stay in the background.
The taste centered around the malts with the hops moving to the background. The lemon comes out a bit stronger than it did in the smell. The taste gets sweeter as the beer warms.
On the palate, it sat very light that led to a smooth feel in the mouth, the carbonation leaves a mild sting on the tongue. It is a very drinkable beer.
Overall, this is a nice grill side beer that is nice to have in the Summer.
