3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - FEB 26, 2013
Flight on tap at the Clybourn Brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a richer deep amber orange hue, gentle haze with frothy whitish head, firm layer and laces ok. Aromas are good nice grapefruit, lemon, and florals. A gentle sweet bready and pale malt sweetness, the hops assert themselves on the nose as we work into. Grows on me. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, offering. Grapefruit, lemon, florals. Firm bitterness, trails into some pale malt, straw, grass, bit of dough. Fairly clean, simple. The beer moves into a gentle sweetness with gentle crystal malt, bready malts. Firm bitterness, earth, a touch resiny. Firmer grapefruit, lemons. Nice finish. Solid IPA. Malt body elements come into focus a bit more as we move in, good richer hoppiness grows as it warms. Solid.

Cask. An easy to drink beer on cask, citrus, but maybe the cask could use some additional dry hopping.

From Growler and served in my GI IPA Tulip: Pours a nice coppery hue with a nice head and spotty lace. The aroma is full of juicy fruits like apricot, grapefruit, blood orange and even some star fruit along with a bit of biscuity and crystal malt. Hint of hop spice and pine as well. Wonderful aroma... the there is the taste.
Well it is simply okay, fruity for sure but the bitterness peters out and the caramel malt seems muddled. There is also an "aspirin" like chalky and medicinal note to this. The mouth feel is sprite and lively but could use some longer finish and less carbonation (in fact my 2nd pour was aggressive to relieve some of the carbonation). When I sampled this off of cask yesterday the mouth feel was so much better, high quality English like versus the regular tap offering I have now. I wished I could have gotten this growler off cask then methinks it would have been a 3.7-3.8 beer... but alas that ain’t happening. (Oh, not really getting any soapy notes like Brian)

Draft at Clybourn. Pours a deep gold with a white head. Nose is soapy, some grapefruit/citrus and citronella. Light caramel note as well. On tasting, same soapy quality with more generic grapefruit. Caramel and an odd sweetness on the finish. Wish they’d do away with that mid range crystal in these IPAs. Meh.
