COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandiose vision for a mile-high skyscraper dubbed "The Illinois," we set out to brew an imperial IPA that would be similar in name and ambition. "The Illinois" Imperial IPA is dry-hopped with three of our favorite hops: Cascade, Meridian, and Citra. the result is a harmoniously hoppy ale with a flavor and aroma that is uniquely Goose Island.

Bottled. Poured clear, honeyed orange with a sticky white head. The aroma picked up sweet honey and caramel notes with accents of fresh citrus and black peppery hoppage.. juicy and enticing. The flavor found sticky honey and lesser caramel at the core, with spicy pepper, citrus, and light grassy bitterness around.. finished peppery and warm, but the boozage didn’t take over. Medium-bodied, but fairly filling on the palate.. good feel and flow.. this was well done.

Goose Island always recommends a serving glass on the label. I went with a snifter instead of the recommended pint glass! Pretty standard on the nose as fas IIPAs go. Flavor is fresh full of hops. Really chewy and sticky on the palate. The resiny bitterness is counter by a malty sticky sweetness. I wouldn’t call this ’balnaced’, as the sweetness and bitterness are both on the extreme side. But that is what I expect from a Imperial beer like this and I’m glad that Goose Island stepped up for this one.

Braudog (5489) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - APR 17, 2014
Bottle. Standard visuals, golden amber with a medium, creamy head. The aroma is over-the-top perfumey, with an almost off-putting floral sting. The beer drinks with an average mouthfeel, neither thin nor as heavily bodied as some DIPAs. That same odd sense of spring pollen is evident in the taste, particularly in the too-mushy finish. 12oz bottle from Downer Wine and Spirits. Pours a deep amber hue with a white head and some lacing. Aroma is hoppy, some pine, some citrus, orange, a little bread. Medium on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, loads of caramel, nutty, bready, some orange citrus hops, with a light bitter finish. Nicely balanced.

Hazy, copper-amber pour with an off-white head. The aroma has orange, grapefruit, and pine. It has a medium body with slightly oily texture and lively carbonation. The taste is bitter with a more bittersweet, dry finish.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a golden amber color. Thin white head. Scent of floral hops. Taste is hoppy and crisp. Citrus and hops linger for a bit. I like it!

I’m already partial to this one because I REALLY want the Imperial IPA they used to make to come back... this isn’t it but has some similar characteristics. Flavor and aroma both dominated by green pine... would never have guessed Citra without being told... but I can get a bit of the onion/citrus fruit on the flavor now knowing. Very well done.... not my particular tastes, but well done GI.

Bottle with cool Frank Lloyd Wright label. Pours amber with a beige head. Nose is strong floral and hoppy scents. Taste reminds me of a Stone beer - very bitter, primarily with bitter hops and just a mildly sweet finish. Medium body. Pretty disappointed in this one - not well balanced.

12oz bottle pours a clear, dark orange with some clumpy, white head. Nose is heavy on the soap, heavy pine needle, some caramel, a little candlewax, some honey comb, blood orange. Flavor is the same, bitter blood orange, grapefruit peel, honey comb, soap and pine. Full bodied, bitter finish. Sticky too.

Bottle. Pours orangish golden with a big white head nice carbonation and lots of thick lacing. Nose is sweet and bright. Citrus, pine, juniper, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, grass, a slight barnyard funk and a bit of bread in the background. Taste is reflective of the 95 IBU without being bitterly resiny. Lots of citrusy hops and fruit. Peach, nectarine, pineapple, mango, lemon curd, toast, chamomile, sweet malt, spruce, white pepper and loads of juicy fresh hops. Medium bodied with fine bubbly carbonation. Left a bit to be desired on the back with an almost sticky back of the tongue. I got a weird throat coat that really turned me off. Decent length with a bit of spice to it. I really enjoyed this and considered it a pretty solid Imperial IPA until I swallowed it.
