COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wrightís grandiose vision for a mile-high skyscraper dubbed "The Illinois," we set out to brew an imperial IPA that would be similar in name and ambition. "The Illinois" Imperial IPA is dry-hopped with three of our favorite hops: Cascade, Meridian, and Citra. the result is a harmoniously hoppy ale with a flavor and aroma that is uniquely Goose Island.

bottle. amber with small head. first, i agree with the other raters who mention that this is more of a barleywine than dipa. medium malt base. rather sweet with bitter hops. some citrus fruitiness comes through. very big beer with plenty of booziness. i wasnít terribly impressed, but maybe my expectations were unreasonable.

Copper color with a medium head. Juicy aroma of orange and tangerine. Strong caramel and biscuity grain flavor. Strong bitterness. Full body. Light citrus and fruit from the hops coming through, but the base seems more barley wine than IIPA (not necessarily a bad thing).

This is a pretty textbook Imperial ipa. A medium sweet and slightly sugary body is balanced by pronounced hops. Tropical fruits shine with notes of pineapple and melon, while finishing with a sticky resin. The alcohol is present but blends nicely into the other flavors. Quite nice.

My rating is pretty on point for this gem. And yes, itís damn good. Hitting a max of 9% , this brew is incredibly smooth. Nice Mellon, citrus scent along with a mouthful of candy resin orange peel. A must have , if youíre going for a strong IPA. Cheers!

Bottle while visiting Chicago. Pours slightly dark amber. Great half-finger foam head. Aromas are rich of sweet caramel malt, citrusy and dank resinous pine hops. Taste pushes back over into the passion and citrus fruits category. Plenty of late bittering hop flavor to balance. Really good beer.

Bottle shared by a friend. Clear amber pour with a thick off-white head. Aroma of malt and piney hop. Sweet malt flavor with pine accents before a bitter grapefruit finish.

First of all, love the label on this. It is a perfect match for a hoppy beer inspired by Frank Loyd Right. The beer itself is pretty good too. They are selling this as an imperical IPA but itís really pushing barleywine territory in terms of strength and sweetness. Itís cloudy orange in color w/ a small ring of white lace. This is a very sweet beer w/ tons of hops. The overall impression is that of tangerine zest, a bit of pine and loads and loads of heavy malt sweetness. I suppose what make this an IPA vs. a barleywine is the fact that the finish has an extremely strong earthy bitteress. Upon pouring, I found this to be bot to sweet and too bitter but as it warms, that strong sweetness stops feeling so heavy and starts giving it a warm, mouth-filling quality. There is quite a bit of alcohol in the nose and across the palate which lends an unfortunate medicinal character but that is only slight and doesnít ruin the experience at all. The finish is drawn out with a sticky smack of sugar that lingers on the tongue. I am kind of curious this hit shelves when it did. It seems like a better choice would be in February when a nice, warming barleywine would really hit the spot.

Pailhead (4622) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - MAY 17, 2014
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate fruit with mango, melon, citrus, pineapple, tropical fruits, and light grapefruit. It pours a transparent amber with a two finger orange-tinted off-white head that has great retention. Eventually it fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is a good amount of soapy webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of mango, tropical fruits, and pineapple. There is a slight touch of caramel in the middle. The finish is moderate-heavily hopped with with good doses of grapefruit and spicy hops. Itís medium bodied with soft carbonation a slightly oily mouthfeel.
