Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandiose vision for a mile-high skyscraper dubbed "The Illinois," we set out to brew an imperial IPA that would be similar in name and ambition. "The Illinois" Imperial IPA is dry-hopped with three of our favorite hops: Cascade, Meridian, and Citra. the result is a harmoniously hoppy ale with a flavor and aroma that is uniquely Goose Island.

Sampler pour on tap at the Clybourn brewpub (Chicago, IL). Big props for Adan helping me out with an extended sampler. Pours a darker golden orange hue, mellow haziness starts to clear out. A frothy whitish head dies to a mellow filmy layer, loose lacing overall as it rings thicker. Aromas present a firm earthy hop influence, lots of florals and grass meet a gentle citrus twist, more resiny and piney influence assaults. Firm but earthy, understated fruit qualities for me, just a touch of citrus. Mellow bready malts are clean, but do show up a touch. Initial is a considerably different offering, showing medium firm fruit presence. Grapefruit and some gentle tropical fruit, gumball/wad element is a bit presence, touch sweet. Florals, citrus rind, and some gentle girthiness. Bigger more potent and complex hop presence offered. Middle shows a touch of body, fruity and crystal malt sweetness, bready and biscuity but still a firm hop presence holds the reigns. Backend is more dry as we start to head on out. Florals, a but of fruit and decent citrus presence tapers. Finish is dry, bitter, a bit of girth in body still hangs around. Soap, florals, firmly bitter finish. Solid, pretty fresh. The nose really didn’t present everything that was in there for me. Pretty solid DIPA though once you get into it. Perhaps a touch sweet at times, but good enough. Not a standout or anything

12oz bottle pours a clear, dark orange with some clumpy, white head. Nose is heavy on the soap, heavy pine needle, some caramel, a little candlewax, some honey comb, blood orange. Flavor is the same, bitter blood orange, grapefruit peel, honey comb, soap and pine. Full bodied, bitter finish. Sticky too.

Keg @ Sedona. Medium amber pour with a small white head. The nose is hot orange peel citrus, toffee. Pretty aggressive. The taste is similar. Strong malty backbone supporting an intense citrus bitterness. Heavy handed, a bit hot and flabby. Medium body, soft carbonation. No real complexity here. Decent.

Orange pour with a white head. The aroma has some strong perfume and flora notes as well as some orange citrus. The flavor has some bitter floral notes with some light pine and orange thrown in. There is also some biscuit malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Draft at the Fair Lakes Whole Foods Market. Poured a mostly clear dark orange color with a foamy off-white head. Plenty of carbonation in this one on the edges of the glass. Aroma was plenty of hop notes, light sweet malts. Flavor was light citrus hops, pine and citra. Pretty tasty.

Bottle. Standard visuals, golden amber with a medium, creamy head. The aroma is over-the-top perfumey, with an almost off-putting floral sting. The beer drinks with an average mouthfeel, neither thin nor as heavily bodied as some DIPAs. That same odd sense of spring pollen is evident in the taste, particularly in the too-mushy finish. Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate fruit with mango, melon, citrus, pineapple, tropical fruits, and light grapefruit. It pours a transparent amber with a two finger orange-tinted off-white head that has great retention. Eventually it fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is a good amount of soapy webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of mango, tropical fruits, and pineapple. There is a slight touch of caramel in the middle. The finish is moderate-heavily hopped with with good doses of grapefruit and spicy hops. It’s medium bodied with soft carbonation a slightly oily mouthfeel.
