COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandiose vision for a mile-high skyscraper dubbed "The Illinois," we set out to brew an imperial IPA that would be similar in name and ambition. "The Illinois" Imperial IPA is dry-hopped with three of our favorite hops: Cascade, Meridian, and Citra. the result is a harmoniously hoppy ale with a flavor and aroma that is uniquely Goose Island.

Draft at the Fair Lakes Whole Foods Market. Poured a mostly clear dark orange color with a foamy off-white head. Plenty of carbonation in this one on the edges of the glass. Aroma was plenty of hop notes, light sweet malts. Flavor was light citrus hops, pine and citra. Pretty tasty.

Keg @ Sedona. Medium amber pour with a small white head. The nose is hot orange peel citrus, toffee. Pretty aggressive. The taste is similar. Strong malty backbone supporting an intense citrus bitterness. Heavy handed, a bit hot and flabby. Medium body, soft carbonation. No real complexity here. Decent.

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2014 A medium-strong hop aroma. Very clear, un-bubbly. This is fairly sweet and sugary with a hop alcohol note that’s more noticeable near the end. Decent but not what I’m feeling at the moment. Had again and had to raise this up. Truly fantastic.

Pours a lightly hazy golden orange with a creamy off white head that laced. Aroma of dark fruits, sweet caramel malt and citrusy hops. Flavor of sweet caramel malt, lightly citrusy hop and pine notes. Too sweet and malty for me. Some dank hop character as well.

Copper color with a medium head. Juicy aroma of orange and tangerine. Strong caramel and biscuity grain flavor. Strong bitterness. Full body. Light citrus and fruit from the hops coming through, but the base seems more barley wine than IIPA (not necessarily a bad thing).

Snifter at Eddies. Filtered copper-orange color, nice amber hues. Big, steady off-white head. Nice, cool, crisp hop tones. Really solid IIPA. Rindy, grapefruit, very resinous yet cool and crisp too. Toasty malt background, some caramel, richer malt tones than, say, FFF. Resinous finish, dry, sweet, nice balance.

Well, while I was debating with drowland on the merits of appearance rating, I failed to notice the head on my glass of The Illinois. This would be a big deal to drowland, but alas all foam is ephemeral and I can move on to rate the brew and the bottle’s appearance. Super clean art deco label, would make a nice poster in your office. Oakwood/citrine clear beer. Standard US longneck. Candied aroma with nice hops - I’m starting to take a real shine to Citra. Lightly sweet, stiffly hopped, a little mineral, the occasional funky-off woody note. Medium to slightly heavy body. Good carbonation. Warming, and woody in the finish. This was well done. New Leaf Market.

Rated on 3-21-2014 at 800 Degrees Three Fires (Fort Wayne, IN). This draft beer pours a small beige head with a short retention, transparent gold body, minimal carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aromas are caramel malt, sweet, bitter, and very citrus orange hops. The taste is sweet, bitter, caramel malt, alcohol, and citrus orange hops. The mouth feel is smooth and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, the hops play the part that they should with this beer given this beer’s style. This is a beer for the hop heads and worth trying.

Pours clear amber with a nice off white lacing head. Aroma is malty caramel hoppy piny citric fruity. Flavor as aroma, great bitter piny resin bite with a longlived grapefruit piny finish.

Pours a dense and murky reddish orange with two fingers of sandy tan head. Nose is a bit muddled, oxidized and papery with some heavy citrus rind notes and piney notes. Rich flavor, bit too much body and malt presence to my taste. Citrus rind and earthy biscuity malt. Piney notes as well.
