COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandiose vision for a mile-high skyscraper dubbed "The Illinois," we set out to brew an imperial IPA that would be similar in name and ambition. "The Illinois" Imperial IPA is dry-hopped with three of our favorite hops: Cascade, Meridian, and Citra. the result is a harmoniously hoppy ale with a flavor and aroma that is uniquely Goose Island.

I’m already partial to this one because I REALLY want the Imperial IPA they used to make to come back... this isn’t it but has some similar characteristics. Flavor and aroma both dominated by green pine... would never have guessed Citra without being told... but I can get a bit of the onion/citrus fruit on the flavor now knowing. Very well done.... not my particular tastes, but well done GI.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a golden amber color. Thin white head. Scent of floral hops. Taste is hoppy and crisp. Citrus and hops linger for a bit. I like it!

Goose Island always recommends a serving glass on the label. I went with a snifter instead of the recommended pint glass! Pretty standard on the nose as fas IIPAs go. Flavor is fresh full of hops. Really chewy and sticky on the palate. The resiny bitterness is counter by a malty sticky sweetness. I wouldn’t call this ’balnaced’, as the sweetness and bitterness are both on the extreme side. But that is what I expect from a Imperial beer like this and I’m glad that Goose Island stepped up for this one.

Tap at Third Base. Pours fairly clear copper orange. Nice lacing. Nose is citrus. Taste is citrus and pine. Bitter pine aftertaste.

On tap at Fraser's. The pour is a light copper, crystal clear works thin white head and some awesome lacing going on. The aroma is heavy citrus and pine with a strong malt undertone. The flavor is a bit lore malt oriented. There is a strong malt and piney resin presence. Very good and dry for a strong IPA. The mouth feel is a touch thin with a perfect amount of carbonation and a delightfully citrusy dominated aftertaste. Just a great IPA. This is an incredibly delicious beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap, served in a snifter. Bright, citrusy aromas. Plenty of hop flavor but not a palate wrecker by any stretch, well balanced and easy to drink. The 9% ABV is hidden well.

Sweet fruit and caramel aroma. Light caramel, floral hops and grapefruit bitterness. Apple sweetness. Dry finish. Hints of lemon.

A really nice double IPA! The Illinois pours a light copper color with a substantial off-white head. The head leaves a cascading, sticky lace around the edge of the glass. The nose is full of fruity hops, but balanced nicely with some caramel and bready malts. The body is perfectly drinkable, smooth and well-balanced. The only characteristic of this beer I don’t really care for the overly malty finish. I get a little too much rye-type of flavor toward the end of the flavors. Other than that, this impy IPA is a real winner!

Copper color with a medium head. Juicy aroma of orange and tangerine. Strong caramel and biscuity grain flavor. Strong bitterness. Full body. Light citrus and fruit from the hops coming through, but the base seems more barley wine than IIPA (not necessarily a bad thing).

12 oz. bottle from Sam’s Bottle Shop, Durham, NC. Hazy, rusty orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of tangerine and grapefruit with a generous toffee malt presence. The taste offers bitter, citrusy hops with sweet caramel and toffee malts that keep the taste from becoming grassy or piney. Bitterness does not linger very long. A very good DIPA.
