COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
is a full-bodied, malty beer. It is our only lager beer served unfiltered, the way all beer was traditionally made years ago. Despite its dark color and rich caramel aroma, Dunkles is light in texture and smooth to drink.

Hazy mahogany with average head & lacing. Nose of celery & cabbage, loads of DMS. Tastes lightly sweet with notes of dark chocolate & dark fruits. Oily creamy finish but balanced.

A bit on the syrupy side. But it promises a lot more than it delivers. Like a thickened version of the marzen.

Draught, Atlanta location. Clear red-copper body with mild carbonation and a creamy off-white head. Appearance does not square with the "unfiltered" claim on the menu but I guess it could have settled. Munich malt aroma with dark bread crusts and black tea plus caramel. Flavor has more tea qualities and a prominent scorched sweet element like over-baked cookies. Instantly cloying and over-satiating. Insipid beer aimed at a beer clown’s palate.

From tap at the brewpub in Palo Alto. Pours hazy dark brown with a small and solid tan head. Aroma is mild vegetable and dark roasted malty. Flavour is dark malty, breaidh and roasted flavoured. Light bitterness and mild acidic roasted note. Dry and dark malty finish. Far from the origins.

Cloudy dark red. Sweet malt, roasty hops and fruit in the nose. The body is sweet and malty with light hops in the middle. Dries out really quick.

Not that bad aromas of malt and some chocolate, but the watery nature of the beer in the glass translates to a watery palate. A weak contender -- maybe I just don’t care for the style.

FlacoAlto (3810) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - NOV 7, 2003
Sampled on tap at the brewery in San Jose.
This beer is unfiltered, so it is quite cloudy. It is a reddish brown color, and has a thin tan head. Quite fruity smelling. It is lightly astringent in the finish and has quite a bit of diacetyl as well as a malty backbone, which is nice. Ultimately the diacetyl in the background distracts from this beer.

On tap at Gordon Biersch, Mission Valley, San Diego. Chocolate brown, translucent colouring. Thin topping of spaced-out lacing man. Smells a bit like plastic and marzipan - not the most pleasant combination in the World. A fairly pleasant taste, but tinged with a certain oddness, as per the aroma. Choc and cream on the whole, perhaps like bourbon biscuit or a donut. Fairly strong on the finish. Only OK.

Quite tasty, despite being overwhelmingly disappointed with my Biersch visit. Probably wouldn’t order any of the Biersch offerings after trying the sampler platter in Las Vegas.
