2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Travlr (5399) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - AUG 12, 2011
Draft at DCA. Cloudy yellow orange, large fluffy white head. Aroma of banana and clove. Taste is banana juice. Seems artificial.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 FlacoAlto (3155) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JUL 26, 2011
Arrives from the tap with a one finger thick, lightly tan colored head. The beer is a hazy, light amber color that shows some gold notes around the edges were the light comes through. The beer smells solidly of clove up front, this is backed by an appetizing tart wheat character and some whole grain cracker like aromatics. The aroma is fairly typical, but ends up being quite appetizing to me at this point.
More creamy feeling than the Kolsch I just had, but it has some carbonic tickle to it towards the finish. Creamy and slightly chewy feeling on the palate, this accentuates a grain / malt sweetness that is also brought out by a clove spiciness. The beer is actually a bit on the warm side for a beer served in such a commercial place, and I am sure that this is a bit unintended, though it likely helps with the flavors. There seems to be just a hint of diacetyl in this beer, it is only noticeable in the flavor after some time spent with this beer and is not a serious detraction; it does add a hint of buttery like character at times (mostly in the oral nasal interface), but is easy to overlook, and I can almost forget that I have noticed it at times. This has a nice grain flavor to it, from the tart wheat notes, to the chewy whole grain wheat malt notes and a touch of biscuit like character as well as the somewhat muddled hay and grain flavors that is typical of a HefeWeizen.
Not a bad HefeWeizen, the diacetyle is certainly a flaw, but it is somewhat on the subtle side (though I am particularly sensitive to it, so most / many would not even notice it). A somewhat more than serviceable example of the style, it has a bit holding it back, that keeps it from being something I would drink on a repeated basis. This would be a beer I would happily drink again if it didn’t have the hints of diacetyle to it (I am a bit prone to noticing this flaw though, so take that with a grain of salt).

Hazy yellow color, small white head. Sweet overriped banana aroma. Light to medium-bodied. Banana, clove, light esters. A bit weak palate otherwise decent hefeweizen.

TAP (Honolulu): Pour is hazy yellow. Clove and banana aroma. Taste to match but much more banana. Too much banana for me.

Appearance: cloudy medium gold, with a foamy, eggshell head. Aroma: bubblegum, banana, clove and wheat. Taste: wheaty, with some citrus, clove, and banana notes. Finish: hefty, slightly sweet, and slowly drying. Notes: Actually a pretty nice example of the style. About as good as their marzen, which is probably my favorite of theirs.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 taphandle (1039) - Texas, USA - MAY 16, 2011
Hazy yellow, good head. Aroma seems "creamy" with smells of banana. Taste is a a good hefeweizen twang with bits of citrus in there. Finish fades to slightly sour but pleasant notes. I actually think it’s a decent American Hefeweizen.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Loeb (1) - Tacoma, USA - MAY 2, 2011 does not count
One of the best main-stream hefs in the US. When I fly through OAK, I never miss it.

Thanks to Huhzubendah for bringing this bottle over to share with the other Matt and myself. Amyliz4 said no thanks. Served in a Captain Lawrence tulip.
Pours a hazy, somewhat dark, yellow-gold with a nice white head. Really nice lacing. The nose has a pretty standard hefeweizen aroma, leaning more heavily toward the banana/bubblegum end of the spectrum than the clove, but pretty good. Bit too much breadiness, which really carried over into the flavor, where the malt tended to dominate the yeast. Medium body and a bit too heavy. Moderately too sweet. Decent enough, but not something I’d seek out.
