COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of the Maibock beer began in the 14th century in Einbeck, Germany. This bock beer style was so popular the brewmaster was lured away by the Bavarians to replicate the style. Gordon Biersch Maibock is rich and full-bodied, emphasizing dark roasted, caramelized Munich malt and brewed in accordance to the German Purity Law of 1516.

Draft at Reagan National. Pours a deep amber/ mahogany. Nose was all sulfur. blech. Flavor had some great malt character with sweetness, caramel and a pretzel kinda note. Finish was long with the sweetness and a dose of bitterness.

Amber with white head. Malt aroma of bread, toast, a little hay. Very light citrus hop finish. Medium sweet with very lightly bitter finish. Medium bodied with lively carbonation and long finish. Strong malt flavor, if you like this, like I do, then you will like this beer.

12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Total Wine & More in Alpharetta, Georgia. Appearance: Pours out a clear, caramel-colored body with a tall head stand of off-white foam. Smell: Pils malts wrapped up in moderately toasted bread. It’s like a pils malt sandwich! Additional supporting notes of herbs, caramel, and apples. Taste: Opens with a taste seemingly of pilsner malts with some addition of toasted bread accents. Slight caramel sweetness. Hint of baked apple. Lightly herbal, leafy hops with a touch of balancing bitterness. Drying, herbaceous finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation. Could benefit from a slight boost in carbonation, as it sits rather languid on the tongue. Drinkability: If nothing else, it paired surprisingly well with the cover song "You Oughta Know" by the group Das Racist. While (for me at least) none of the bottle Gordon Biersch brews have been exemplary, they’ve at least been sufficient to get the job done.

On tap. Pours an orangey brown color with a small soapy off white head. Notes of cookie, caramel, chocolate, dust, and biscuits. Medium body and moderate finish that hides the 7 percent alcohol fairly well.

Pours with a hazy orange body and a long lasting off-white head. Aroma of fruity esters, dry grain, grass, alcohol caramel. A bit of "generic German beer smell" (pils malt + noble hops?). A bit of dust. Flavor is a bit bitter, butter, caramel, toast, bread, some fruitiness. Creamy to fizzy bubbles. Not bad.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2010 On tap at Gordon Biersch at the San Jose airport. Shame on GB for having Bud and Bud Light on tap here to appease the ignorant/brainwashed masses. Clear medium amber color with minimal head. Aroma is pleasant and sweet-smelling with caramel malt and some plum-like fruitiness. Flavor is caramel malt and pale malt along with slight dark fruit notes. Very mild bittering hops come through on the finish. Decent. Medium-bodied with low carbonation. Rather flat on the mouthfeel. Overall, well, this is all right. Slight shortcomings on the palate and appearance are made up for by pretty good aroma and flavor for the style.

Reddish-orange in color with a thin white head. Aroma of roasted malts and spice. Flavor is earthy and bready, slightly sweet. Finishes with a tinge of bitterness. All in all not very flavorful. Kind of a thick, sticky mouthfeel. Overall just ok.

12oz bottle. Clear amber with a lasting white head. Rich bready, malty aroma with dark bread crust and caramel. The flavor is a munich malt bomb, with lots of bready, crusty, grainy maltiness, starting a bit sweet, and finishing quite dry with a touch of hops and alcohol. Very clean stuff, and working the malt quite well, though it doesn’t do much else. Medium-full body with medium carbonation. Well made stuff that works the style pretty well, though there is only so much to get excited about with a pretty one-dimensional munich malt flavor.

Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, CA. Pours ruddy copper with a creamy off-white head. Bready aroma. Hints of spice and grass. Medium body with almost creamy carbonation. Flavor is bready, and there is some grass/herb bitter, but it is bready and finishes that way. It could stand some kick. Eh. Maybe that wouldn’t be to style. It’s an ok drink. Should be satisfactory as a lenten substitute. Liquid bread.
