COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. It was also the beer served at the Original Oktoberfest celebration, which originated as a wedding reception for the King Ludwig I and Maria Theresa. Bavaria was a very poor country and had little cause for celebration, so the King and Queen invited the entire population of Bavaria to the reception. They showed up that year and every year thereafter, and the event evolved into the modern day Oktoberfest. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.

12 oz bottles Gordon Biersh San Jose CA. The older G.B Marzen had a brown and white label with a man examining a poured glass on the label. The newest Label has a Red G and black B with RED and Black Labeling. Nice sweet roasted dark malts with none of the cheaper pine and citrus additive/flavored hops thrown into so many major named breweries products these days. G.B Brewery San Jose has done a great job replicating the classic Marzen however is not using the strong sweet dark malts to cover any flavor changes. Nice to a old favorite taste pretty much the same as old. Auburn colored pour with immediate caramelized malt flavors. Sweet but with just enough hops to balance as not to be to sweet for the style. Probably not going to able to go head to head against A Paulaner Oktoberfest or Munich based brewery dark, however at less than 1/2 the price of other top choices a very respectful example that be enjoyed without draining ones wallet.

Delicious! You smell the caramel from the start, and it continues through your palate. It sits on the back of your tongue, and it's very pleasurable. I would drink a few of these in a sitting, but not more than a handful, with the sweetness level. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured in to a dimpled glass. leaves an off white 1 finger head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a clear nut brown color with medium carbonation Aroma is a malty caramel with a roasty nut. hints of tar are present. Flavor is a metallic nutty stone. very light if any hops and bitterness on the back. It’s an alright beer that you can share with people but there is better session ales out there

Yeesh. So this is what we’ve come to. The basic McDonalds cheeseburger of beers. No glory here. Orange, astringent and along the road towards undrinkable. Tap at DC brewpub.

Draft - No head and a nice red/brown color to it. Dry flavor with a little taste of hops and some sweetness. Well balanced with no overwhelming taste profile in either direction.

Draft as part of the sampler. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted bready malts, light caramel, light fruit, grass, a hint of bitterness to the finish. Boring typical stuff.

Bottle pour. Clear copper with decent light brown head but fades quickly. Light malty aroma. Light to medium body. Malty taste with a slight toffee aftertaste. Not a bad beer to drink, but not a lot going on. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
