COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. It was also the beer served at the Original Oktoberfest celebration, which originated as a wedding reception for the King Ludwig I and Maria Theresa. Bavaria was a very poor country and had little cause for celebration, so the King and Queen invited the entire population of Bavaria to the reception. They showed up that year and every year thereafter, and the event evolved into the modern day Oktoberfest. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.

On draught. Amber color. Sweet sticky caramel aroma, slightly artificial. Quite sweet malt taste with caramel and apple notes.

Glass at the brewpub in Tempe AZ.

Dark amber pour, nice head. Full rich body, gentle sweetness, some hop tones--not bad.

[2/20/15] Draught at Gordon Biersch Mission Valley in San Diego. Clear amber. Aroma of malt, a bit of caramel and toast. Sweetish flavor, caramelly, with a buttery touch, a toasty hint and a drier finish. Light to medium-bodied. Not very good but quite easy-drinking.

draft, this one was ok. The balance and flavor profile was pretty much dead on, did taste a little flat.

Bottled. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is wooden, floral, mild earthy notes. Flavour is fruity, floral and quite nicely balanced sweet malts to it. Flavour is very similar in a good balance. Not the most exciting Märzen though.

A clear, dark golden beer with a small, off-white head. The aroma is caramel malty with a fruity touch. It’s medium bodied, a bit sweet on the palate, and with a very soft carbonation. Caramel, some bread and a faint roasted touch in the flavor. Fruityness and some grass, and a faint bitterness. Lasting bready finish with a fruity touch. Rather boring and far from true to style this one. 140227

Süßlicher, malzig herber Antrunk. Die Süße ist etwas zu stark, hell, besonders zum Ende eher laff. Ok. 8/9/9/8//9

On tap at Gordon Biersch Park Lane. Poured a clear copper with a thin beige head and no lacing. Taste of caramel malts, slightly roasted malts, and malty throughout. Medium carbonation, medium body. Meh...

This beer was very good it had medium body and well balanced hops. I would drink this on a regular basis. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aromas of caramel, carbonated malts, sugared toffee and grains. Appears a standard copper with a thin white foam rim. Taste is buttered caramel, hops, creamy malts, subtle toffee and hop oils. Overall, pretty solid lager actually. Well rounded taste with a noticeable hop profile.

Tap, Seattle. Pours a crystal clear orangish copper body with a small fizzy head that quickly vanished. The nose is a little too sweet with a butterscotch like note that really spells disaster for me. I hate that in what’s supposed to be a clean lager. The flavor is showing significant diacetyl. Sweet buttery caramel malt base, zero hops to balance or cover it up. Light bodied but clingy and sticky from the diacetyl, soft gentle carbonation. Major brewing flaws here, yuck
