3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draught (Tempe). Light Brown head sits on top of a dark body with reddish highlights. Aroma cold mild coffee, slight sourness, light graininess, low hop, and some metallic. Flavor is not sweet, but not overly dry at the same time, watery chocolate milk. Light/medium palate, fizzy, somewhat dry, and not much alcohol presence. “#1 Ale House Derby.”

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draught @ DC: Dark brown that shows up as a clear amber when held to the light. It has a medium creamy white head. The aroma has some coffee, chocolate, light roasted malts, and a bit of toasted malt. The first taste shows a bit of toasted malt and chocolate, then the following sips show more roasted coffee and pale malts. Light-medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Gordon Biersch in Washington, DC. Very nice dark brown ale (as long as you don’t expect a stout). Poured very dark with creamy head with a light aroma of coffee & chocolate. Flavor mimics aroma, but not heavy at all -- smooth palate. An excellent dark beer for the summer (although I prefer true stouts in the winter). Overall, above average.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft. Mission Valley. Very dark brown upon pouring. Roasted malts seem to dominate the aroma. There is also a slight hint of chocolate. Flavor is malty and has a strong roasted coffee bean bitterness.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap @ Mission Valley. Was served to me with a perfect fluffy pillow of head gently resting on top a dark brown beer. It could have fooled me as being black if only it was in a much wider glass. The nose was average and had a pleasant aroma of toasted malt. The drink had similiar flavors to chocolate and roasted dark malt with a tiny buttery profile. Indeed a solid black lager from GB.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
(Draft: Gordon Biersch Brewing Co. in San Diego, CA) Having just taken my postal test, I now have a rare afternoon off from the Post Office, and so commences an afternoon of hitting the local breweries. First up is this Schwarzbier. It’s very dark brown in color, nearly black, and in fact, it is black unless I hold it up to the bright blue San Diego sky. Tan head is large and very bubbly when served, but fades to a thin film. Lightly sweet and roasty notes in the nose, but the aroma is mostly that standard Gordon Biersch lager aroma. Surprisingly, the flavor is quite dry and roasty, mildly bitter, but not sweet and not all that malty. I swear I taste a bit of soap in here. Very carbonated mouthfeel, medium in body. Not bad, but a bit too dry to me.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Dark body with good head and lacing. Had a roasted flavor and aroma. Was kind of disappointed with the dry finish but will have to go back and give this one another look.
