I had a few of these on draft at the brewpub in ’Cowlumbus’ before heading over to the Rob Zombie show last night. This was my introduction to Schwarzbier. This brew pours a nearly black brown with red highlights. The average rocky tan head is fully lasting with good lacing. The bold nose though not overpowering, is clean and complex with hints of toasty roasted grain and cereal, caramel, herbs, grass, resin, leather, earth, and date. I found the moderate flavor to be slightly unbalanced leaning towards heavy roasted malt sweetness, with an earthy yeasty finish of average duration. The body is medium to full, with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. A very good brew.

Sampled at Gordon Biersch Dallas, TX. Pours almost black hue. Aroma is coffee and some toasted malt. Body is creamy, medium-full. Taste is similar to aroma. Long coffee finish. On the whole, it is nice brew.

Whoa, heavy as heck on this one here (need to watch my language in family-oriented Colorado). Slight smoky and wafty flavor.

Draft. Hazy brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, and a light sweetness. Medium body with malt sweetness upfront and notes of chocolate and fruit esters.

Coke pour with an of-white head with lacing effects. Roasted aromas with some coffee and burnt wheat. Tastes of watery coffee, faint dark chocolate, and some smokiness. Thick mouth feel, fills you up quite fast. Almost syrup-like in regards to the palate. A tasty beer.

Draft @ Annapolis: Poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was smoked malts and nuts. The flavor was smooth, well balanced, smoke, sweet malts, nuts, and a hint of jerky. Overall, my favorite at this place and starting to be a favorite style of mine as well.

On tap at Gordon Biersch, Atlanta. Clear dark brown with tanned head. Smell is sweet and roasted malty. Taste is sweet malty with roasted tones. High carbonation.

On tap at GB Old Town Pasadena. Pours a clear black obsidian with a very thin tan head. Nutty aroma with chocolate, toffee, vanilla and citrus notes. Strong coffee flavor with a slightly roasted malt backbone and floral, herbal hops. Thin mouthfeel. Crisp finish with some caramel and vanilla sweetness. This just missed the boat along the way because it could be a very good beer.

one of the better gordon biersch offerings, which isn’t saying much. it’s pretty smoky and burnt and very dry, but it was the best of what was on tap at the palo alto GB
