COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Although literally meaning "black beer" in German, Schwarzbier has a light body with a dry, roasted finish, Gold Medal winner at the 2006 World Beer Cup and the 2007 Great American Beer Festival.

Draft at Gordon Biersch-Columbus. Pours a dark brown-amber, clear, with big carbonation bubbles and a beige head. Aroma of toasted brown sugar, chocolate and roasted malts, and earth. Flavor of toasted and caramel malts, darker chocolate than in the nose, earth, and pumpernickel. Light-medium bodied, with medium-high carbonation and a toasty mouthfeel. Not a bad schwarzbier.

Tap at the DC location. Dark black beer, thick brown head. Aroma is quite nice and molasses-laden. Earthy herbal chocolate with a soft roasty toastiness. Herbal and a little bit toasty. Softly lagered malts and a nice roasty dryness. Pretty nice schwartz.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2009 1. From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 12/10/2007 (Gordon Biersch Chattanooga) Roast aroma. Small white head. Dark coloured smooth on the palate and malty with a lasting roast finish. 2. Cask Stillage from the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 26/09/2009 (Gordon Biersch Broomfield) Bready malt aroma. Dark coloured fruity and a little rich on the palate with some bitterness and dryness in a full malt finish.

[3105-20100703] Tap. Toasted stinky socks and smoky charred beet aroma hints at some tree earth. Clear, dark red body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Mild earthy tree malt continues in the flavour with a lingering earthy malt aftertaste. Medium body. Fair.

Draft. Listed as ’Smoked Schwarz’. Mahogony beer with a dark cream colored head. light smoke aroma. Smoke and light bacon flavor with malt. Medium bodied Smoke and light bacon lingers with malt. I don’t know if this is a different beer or not.

On tap at the San Francisco location of GB. Pours a deep mahogany/copper color with medium white head. A sweet nutty aroma. A lightly roasted flavor, nutty, earthy grainy feel. Nice.

Draft to taster at the Atlanta brewpub. Looks solid; a transparent brown with foamy off-white head. Smells malty with notes of dough and lager yeast. Tastes like it smells, only better, with a solid mouthfeel. A decent example of the style.

On tap at the Pizza Port Session Ale Fest. Pours with a hazy deep brown body and a generous khaki head. Aroma of leather, cocoa, and coffee. Taste is light coffee, leather, earthy malts, and a bit lactic. Light bubbles, dry mouthfeel.
