3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From a sampler at the Gordon Biersch DC location on September 4th, 2005. Dark brown to black bodied. Roasty malts and light coffee. Some faint smoky notes and caramel.Taste has roasty malts, light coffee, dark chocolate and hints of cocoa. Body is medium-full with medium carbonation. Finishes roasty and sweet. I liked this best of the sampler and purchased a pint of this afterwards.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 8, 2008 Draught, Miami. Deep dark brown with inch-thick even foam. Smells like toasted grain husks, tree bark. Malty body includes lots of apples. Not bad; the only clean pour of the night unfortunately.
rich velvet black with small white head, opaque. Mild, malty aromas, chocolate syrup, some dark berries, and licorice. Thin. Nice malt. Clean. Licorice, chicory, and cocoa. Abrupt finish but for some lingering malts. Not bad.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at GB KC. The body was very dark brown. The aroma was roasted coffee with some light caramel. The taste was roasted coffee and caramel. Again, another GB beer with a nice clean finish. Probably the best I had while at GB in KC.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Had more than a few pints of this at a recent dinner at the DC location. Looks like a stout, opaque black, soft white head. Aroma of toast, nuts, some dark fruits. Flavor was malty, nutty, toast, breads. Crisp, clean finish. Good session beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap, DC location, 2006 RBSG pubcrawl. Pours a dark brown, similar to cola, under a small fizzy off-white head. Aroma is roasty with a little chocolate malt and light coffee. Flavor is nicely chocolaty and dry with a little coffee on the finish. Mouthfeel is fairly thin with a watery fizzy texture. A pretty good Schwarzbier, dry and crisp flavor and refreshingly light. A very good choice for a steaming hot summer day.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Sampled on draft at the Virginia Beach brewpub this beer poured a very dark brown color with orange highlights and a small tan head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was faint but dryish with a hint of roasty malts. The flavor was dry, malty, roasty and woody. Medium length dry, roasty and woody finish. Medium body. Meh.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
By far the darkest colored beer on tap at the Las Vegas brewpub. It was quite dark with lots of red highlights. A small almost white head. Very nice richly malted flavor is roasted. Some light smoke. Their boldest beer and one of their better ones.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the DC location. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a dark chestnut brown with a slight tan head and a bit of lacing. The nose is darkly-roasted malts with some light chocolate as well as a moderate amount of earthy hops.
The taste is a bit more subdued. There is some nice roast, but the chocolate and earthy notes from the nose are quite a bit more muted. The feel is nice and pretty roasty. Fairly dry in general with a nice finish. Drinkability is decent enough, but there’s not enough there to keep me hanging on.
Serving type: on-tap
