I don’t usually go for the black beers but I liked this one. I thought the head retention was adequate and the maltiness of the aroma was enticing. The body isn’t too heavy. The palate is very creamy and pleasantly bitter.

Draft at Tempe, AZ, brewpub. Dark and nearly opaque, with ruby highlights. Dark malt and fruit in aroma. A hint of goat in taste which is dominated by dark malt and a bit of raisin, without being roasty; would not be atypical in Erlangen (would need more roastiness for Kulmbach).

From tap in Pasadena. Pours dark brown with a redish glare and a lacing white head. Solid roasted malt and liqourice hops aroma, very inviting. Dry, roasted and liqourice flavour in a tasty and smooth mix. Lovely.

Draught at the Palo Alto brewpub. Dark brown with a tan head. Toasted bread and light chocolate in the aroma. The flavor is pretty dry and drinkable overall, but with some caramel sweetness up front. Toasty grain and chocolate malt flavors with a light background roast. Hops are mild but provide a good, clean balancing bitterness. Clean fermentation character. Medium-light body but with a rich, smooth mouthfeel. Clean and well balanced overall, and showing a pretty German sense of restraint compared to other local black lagers that end up more like bottom-fermented stouts.

Draft. Listed as ’Smoked Schwarz’. Mahogony beer with a dark cream colored head. light smoke aroma. Smoke and light bacon flavor with malt. Medium bodied Smoke and light bacon lingers with malt. I don’t know if this is a different beer or not.

Transfer from BA review on 12-28-13- Served on tap in a pilsner glass Appearance – The beer is served a dark brown nearly black color with a billowy cream colored head of two fingers. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is heaviest of a toasted malt smell mixed with a bit of cocoa. Along with these aromas are some sweeter smells with some caramel and a bit of a sweet vanilla smell. Taste – The taste begins with a caramel sweetened and toasted malt flavor. As the taste advances from the start, some other sweeter flavors of a vanilla nature as well as a bit of a sweeter cocoa come to the tongue. The cocoa remain quite light throughout the taste while the roasted flavors intensity ever so slightly more toward the end. With a slight increase in the vanilla and caramel at the end, the combination of flavors that is left leaves a slightly sweeter and nicely toasted flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel-The body of the beer is on the lighter and slightly thinner side with a carbonation level that is average. Both are decent for the combination of the sweet with roasted flavors of the brew and match the low abv of the beer rather well. Overall – A goodt schwarzbier. Light in abv. with a decent amount of roasted and toasted flavors. A rather good session style beer.

Decent brew on tap at the restaurant in SF. Very smooth, nice and malty. Lots of roasted character. Nice full body with a smooth finish. Solid schwarz.
