Draft at the Vegas location, a "Brewer’s Reserve" selection. Dark brown with a massive crown of foam. This has a chalky malt character with a caramel-heavy personality. There’s a nice full body behind it and a starkly bitter, nutty finish. (#4477, 2/14/2012)
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 SamGamgee (2452) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - MAR 28, 2010
Draught at the San Jose location. They claimed to have this on because the schwarzbier ran out, so I don’t know if they brewed it in house or got it from the production brewery which is right across town. Pours a dark red-brown, pretty clear, with a lasting beige head. The aroma has some chocolate and dark bready malt, and a touch of grape-like fruitiness. Hops are pretty mild in the flavor, letting the malt sweetness come out more. Caramel and bread are the most forward malt flavors, with a light fruitiness but pretty clean overall profile. Just a touch of spicy hop flavor but mild bitterness. Medium bodied with medium-light carbonation. Some nice malt flavors, but a touch underhopped, lowering the drinkability and showing the higher gravity.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 beachbum25 (1084) - Powellville, Maryland, USA - APR 4, 2009
On tap-Annapolis location-Cloudy amber color w/a carbonated off white head. Sweet malt aroma. Heavy malt flavor, particularly for this style. Not as sweet as a typical Belgian, had an earthy flavor w/a lot of carbonation. Did have a little bit of caramel to it. Reminded me more of a Weizen Bock than a Dubbel. Not a bad brew, just wasn’t what I was expecting f/the description.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Cybercat (2519) - Georgia, USA - MAR 26, 2009
Pours a dark, barely translucent honey-amber with a thick, fine-bubbled, persistent off-white head. Aroma is not strong but malty and spicy and quite inviting. Flavor is malty, spicy, hoppy, slightly woody, and just a little bitter with hints of caramel and evergreen. Texture is smooth but edgy, leaving a hoppy and slightly sweet finish.
