COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 11th century, Bavarian monks brewed large vats of a strong, dark-flavored malt to help sustain themselves during periods of fasting. Its creaminess, combined with just a gentle hint of sweetness, was so well received, the monks actually began to fast more and more often.
Today, the tradition of their Winter Bock lives on. But only through January. So come in to a Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant and order up this full-bodied, dark Winter Bock. It tastes great with all the seasonal favorites on our menu. Or just fine all by itself.

Bottle, 8/10/11. Dark clear amber with a nice earthy aroma. Good malt flavor with just a hint of sweetness, light feel in the mouth. Smooth finish with a mild malty aftertaste. I’ll drink more of these this winter.

Poured into a wide mouth glass. Aroma was great, chocolatey, and roasty. Flavor was similar. This was what a winter bock should taste like, enjoyable. Palate was full bodied, and finished long and slightly dry, slightly oily.

Bottle. Dark ruby, eye-pleasing pour with a tall, foamy tan head. Aroma is malty with caramel, grains, dark fruit notes and dark bread. Taste is toasted dark bread, caramel, sweet malt, dark fruit, soft spice and grains. Body is medium with a pleasant chewiness and a mild, bubbly carbonation. Finishes with more caramel, toffee notes, sweet malt, grains and fruit.

A perfect classic interpretation of the German original. Pours chestnut brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma is thick with dark malts. A hint of cocoa brings earthiness to the forefront. Thick and syrupy on the palate. Alcohol warming is present, but no fusel or hotness is detectable. While hops are not detectable in the aroma, there is a moderately bitter character in the finish that just barely pulls it from an overwhelmingly sweet precipice.

Nice bock beer for the winter, one of the better beers they make. Good amount of alcohol and a smooth but heavier feel. Nice head on the mug and quality lacing, not bad.

0.5L dimpled mug draft at the Gordon Biersch in Leawood, Kansas. The pour is dark copper, brown, with some reddish hues. The head is tan, about one inch and decently lasting. The aroma is nutty malt light sweetness, soft hay, and general potpourri spice which is subdued and in the background. The taste follows the nose, nutty sweet malt, soft earthy hay and the yeast spice. The maltiness rich, and pretty layered. The palate is medium to heavier bodied initially, though it thins out a bit as it warms. Carbonation is soft, spice and yeast carry the finish. Masked the 7.5% abv well.
