COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
WinterBock is a strong, dark beer that was used by eleventh century Bavarian monks to help sustain themselves during winter fasts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Gordon Biersch WinterBock is a classic dark double bock featuring 4 different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, dark roasted caramel malt, and black malt. This is a big beer with a lot of body, and is available seasonally from November through January.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread), with notes of corn syrup, diacetyl, and vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Pleasant but simple aroma, but a little too sweet as with all of GB's beers.

great bock and a neat place to have a beer. dark appearance, strong aroma but does not taste like 6.5% ABV.

Tasted at Oakville, but it was brewed at Whitby
Medium brown; too much fusel alcohol - gak! Lightly chewy, toffee malts, hint of woody, almond skins. At 6.5% they would have had to work hard to get all those higher alcohols in there, and that is definitely not worth the effort.

(30Dec2002--draft) Like jazz88, had it on tap in Palo Alto Two half-liters were enough to get me rolling on an empty stomach. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. Beautiful to look at; dark ruby/brown color, with an invitingly creamy head. Dense, persistent, but not too lacy. Aroma predominantly syrupy malt. Taste is not particularly complex, but it works pretty well. Dominant, but quickly receding sourness/bitterness gives way to the same syrupy malt flavor. However, it’s malty without being cloyingly sweet. Well done. Finishes with some hints of chocolate malt and some pleasant piney aromatics. Appropriately full mouthfeel. Nice effort from a usually mediocre brewer.

Tap in Palo Alto, CA. Ruby brown color with a laced light brown head. Malty, creamy, bread, and bitter chocolate. There was something about this beer that just didn’t seem right. I had two pints.

Dark brown, somewhat opaque, some sediment. Light coffee coloured lasting head. Strong, slightly spicy sweet malt aroma. Medium body. Sweet malt, caramelly flavours at first that are somewhat overpowered by a very earthy bitterness & a dry, spicy alcoholic finish. Would have liked the flavours to blend together more smoothly.

Wonderful surprise, stopped in San Fran and had to have a GB. This is a very good bock, wonderful color and a very warming brew. Just right for a damp evening in the city by the bay.
