COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
WinterBock is a strong, dark beer that was used by eleventh century Bavarian monks to help sustain themselves during winter fasts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Gordon Biersch WinterBock is a classic dark double bock featuring 4 different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, dark roasted caramel malt, and black malt. This is a big beer with a lot of body, and is available seasonally from November through January.

12 oz bottle bottled on 26 Sept. 2012 and served in a snifter. GB Winter Bock pours a dark mahogany color with a small but attractive tan head. The head has poor retention but there’s decent lacing. Smells like a mix of caramel, medium and dark malts with some sherry/alcohol overtones. Very good malt complexity. Taste: follows nose, but tilts towards the darker malts and show a moderate level of bittering hops. Medium-full body; creamy up front but a bit harsh in the alcohol-laden finish. Proper carbonation. O: A relatively big dopplebock, in terms of flavor. Worthy of the Bavarian references.

Deep rich bronze coloured body with a thin tan head and both ruby & brown highlights - very nice looking! Aroma of caramel, toffee, malt, alcohol and some light spices. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong potent malt and sugars up front with a caramel overtone and a subtle spice at the end. Overall, a pretty good beer for the style - considering what it could have been! Nice at the airport before a flight. I sampled this pint on draught at Gordon Biersch in SFO, California on 21-March-2009.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2014 12 oz bottle from Safeway Salinas. Nose is rich ripe bananas and caramel with a very light hint of anise. Clear cherry brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet caramel, bananas, and a hint of bitterness. 8/4/7/4/15 3.8 2/9/14 New batch that they ruined by overhopping and covering up all the good esters with bitter. Crappy beer now. My rating drops from 3.8 to 2.5

A very good beer. I am really liking Bocks. Pours a spectacular red with a white head. Smells like cherries and other fruit. Taste starts malty, with a fruity middle, and a slight hoppy aftertaste. Very good. Had in the bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours a crystal clear dark brown with a very thin white head. Nose is rather malty with a bit of roasting and a bit of caramel in there. Taste isn’t all that strong, but has similar malty tones to it. Meh.

A reddish brown bock with a thick brown head. In aroma, a sweet nutty malt with grassy notes, dark fruits, dunkel-like. In mouth, a nice roasted malt with dark fruits, molasses, grassy hops, nice and smooth. On tap at Gordon Biersch location at Cleveland Airport, Dec. 2 2012.

Dark amber with a OK slightly off white head. Aroma of candied malt and tastes exactly like it smells. Very sweet. Very smooth. Borderline too sweet, but good.

tap, pours a darkish red, aroma is kind of roasty and flavour is so as well, a strong finish, a bit of chocolate and some darker fruits, interesting offering.

On tap at GB, RDU International. Pour looks like those restaurant soda pours when the syrup’s close to running out, dingy rust cola with a medium head. Generic sweetness and faint toasted malts in the nose. Flavors not much to write home about, and I’m surprised that this was supposed to be a DB since it came across as one of those neo-BMC "bock" entries in its blandly grainy and sweet profile. But I guess I can tolerate caramel.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. By the aroma I would have thought this to be a Weizenbock, notes of banana, clove, melts, toffee. The flavor is all dopplebock, raisin, prune, toffee, slight roasted malts. I find this to be one of the better holiday beers released by a larger brewery.
