COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
WinterBock is a strong, dark beer that was used by eleventh century Bavarian monks to help sustain themselves during winter fasts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Gordon Biersch WinterBock is a classic dark double bock featuring 4 different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, dark roasted caramel malt, and black malt. This is a big beer with a lot of body, and is available seasonally from November through January.

200th rater. 12oz bottled on 9/27/11 consumed today. Pours with a medium sized head. Color is dark brown, too dark to see through. Aroma is slightly sweet and non-sugary caramel. The munich malt is nicely present and accented by some residual sugars but definitely not too much. Earthy, dry yet sweet. Flavor has a great clean lager with munich-caramel sweetness yet low on residual sugars. Finishes nicely dry and a hint of German hops. Leaves a long dry slightly bitter aftertaste. Just a very well made doppelbock, shockingly well made.

Nice nutty aroma lots of caramel and biscuit and sweet malt. Deepdark fruit also. Pours a clear dark amber with off white head. Flavor is sweet in front but balanced by nice clean bitterness. Flavors again of nuts and toast and stuff. Maybe a tad sweet with a medium body and still fairly crisp.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2012 Bottle, 8/10/11. Dark clear amber with a nice earthy aroma. Rich malt flavor with just a hint of sweetness, and a full, creamy feel in the mouth. Smooth finish with a mild malty aftertaste. I’ll drink more of these this winter.

Poured into a wide mouth glass. Aroma was great, chocolatey, and roasty. Flavor was similar. This was what a winter bock should taste like, enjoyable. Palate was full bodied, and finished long and slightly dry, slightly oily.

Bottle. Dark ruby, eye-pleasing pour with a tall, foamy tan head. Aroma is malty with caramel, grains, dark fruit notes and dark bread. Taste is toasted dark bread, caramel, sweet malt, dark fruit, soft spice and grains. Body is medium with a pleasant chewiness and a mild, bubbly carbonation. Finishes with more caramel, toffee notes, sweet malt, grains and fruit.

A perfect classic interpretation of the German original. Pours chestnut brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma is thick with dark malts. A hint of cocoa brings earthiness to the forefront. Thick and syrupy on the palate. Alcohol warming is present, but no fusel or hotness is detectable. While hops are not detectable in the aroma, there is a moderately bitter character in the finish that just barely pulls it from an overwhelmingly sweet precipice.
