Gordon claim to be the original and first christmas beer. Thats bullshit…. But not the beer! It has a sweetish and strong overall taste, accompanied by hints of sandlewood, licorice and coffee. If one takes the lead, it’s the sweet taste of brown sugar. The alcohol is very present, giving a light sparkle in the nose and throat. The finish is bitter sweet and lasts.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2014 330ml bottle poured in a chalice.
A: Pours a beautiful dark amber almost brown clear color. Big beige and fluffy head which dissipates quickly (but not completely) leaving many lacings around
S: Smell is really barley malts. Sweet. Like a biscuit. It’s a bit fruity too, it reminds raisins. Notes of wood and, no surprise, Scotch
T: Really remarkable by strong taste of roasted barley malts. Sweet upfront. Wood, raisins and a nice (really nice) hoppy and bitter end
M: Heavy body and medium to low carbonation. Really molasses. Alcohol can be felt and the bitter end is a must
D: Good. Well done "Scotchy" beer...

Stereotypical Christmas Scotch the Belgian way, but I hasten to add this is a very commercial, filtered example which hardly stands the comparison with the many Belgian Christmas ales that are still inspired by the Scotch style but refuse to advert themselves that way. Reminiscent of the regular Gordon Scotch but sweeter, lots of cookie dough in the nose, spicier too, with more roasted bitterness in the finish. Better, but still too boring to be a really good Christmas ale, though it does seem to benefit a bit from ageing.
