Aroma is malty/roasted with yeast and a dash of spices. Beer pours a very attractive ruby with a big off white head that is fully retained. There is some lacing. Flavor is initally malty. The finish is bitter/dry with a dash of spice. This is tasty beer. The Father of all Christmas Ales.

This is such a cool time of year to live in Belgium, what with these holiday beers. You’ve gotta love the snowy pattern on the red cap foil. 33 cL enjoyed at home... Pours ruddy brown with ruby highlights, cream-colored head recedes to a frothy film. Cherries, dark chocolate and spices are swirling around in that aroma. Tastes only mildly sweet in a way that seems restrained for a Belgian, with an overly clean layer of bitterness that nonetheless offers balance and lasts. Maybe a touch clean and metallic, but still interesting. Average carbonation. More dry, hoppy character than I expected, yet warming... not bad at all.

There is enough spice in this to cut through the normal sweet malt scotch ale flavour . Great sipping by the fire.

Bottle. Nice dark amber and I must confess to being a bit swayed toward a 5 in appearance by the handsome glass it was served in. The aroma seems at 1st like it should be stronger but upon closer inspection it has some nice complexities along the lines of pine, maple, and brandy. Lightly spicy gingerbread flavor, pretty nice.

Let krydret.

CONCLUSION : une banalité atroce.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2014 330ml bottle poured in a chalice. A: Pours a beautiful dark amber almost brown clear color. Big beige and fluffy head which dissipates quickly (but not completely) leaving many lacings around S: Smell is really barley malts. Sweet. Like a biscuit. It’s a bit fruity too, it reminds raisins. Notes of wood and, no surprise, Scotch T: Really remarkable by strong taste of roasted barley malts. Sweet upfront. Wood, raisins and a nice (really nice) hoppy and bitter end M: Heavy body and medium to low carbonation. Really molasses. Alcohol can be felt and the bitter end is a must D: Good. Well done "Scotchy" beer... [ BA Review @ 11/21/2010 ]
