2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Ruby red, brownish. Frothy lasting head. Aromas: cherry bonbon, freshly mown grass, rock sugar syrup (kandij), general earth flavors. Taste largely follows the aroma, but a relatively strong bitterness permeates (roasted malts?). Sticky and sweet (cherries) in the middle. Earthy bitter aftertaste.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.
Looks: Clear deep ruby-red colour; Less than one-quarter finger head and residual soapy off-white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.
Aroma: Very sweet and quite fragrant roasted amber malt as soon as it was popped, with cranberries, cherries, caramel, sherry, light toffee, very light oxidation, strong molasses, biscuits and faint grass.
Taste: Medium sweet malt, with tasty dry roasted grains, caramel, very light toffee, cranberries, strong dry red fruits, strong sticky molasses, very light wet paper, light alcohol, strong dry biscuits, yeast, lemon, lime, quite strong bitter hops and sharp grass.
Body: Close to medium body; Very dry and biscuity palate.
Mouth Feel: Very malty Ale, strongly roasted in a fairly wholesome body. Strong red-fruits on the get go, especially cranberries and dry cherries, with fairly good caramel and toffee in the background. Sweetness is very tasty and acceptable sticky molasses-type, compliment the hops well. Strongly yeasty and dry biscuit as if this is a real liquid cream crackers! 8.8% booze is fairly light and doesn’t bite. This is a winter treat!
Hoppiness: Faint grass in nose. Expressive lemon, lime and grass in taste. Bitterness is quite strong for the style for a lasting, mid astringent bitter-sweet finish.
After Taste: Very dry after taste, fruity and fairly bitter to mouth.
Comments: Bought this just in time for Christmas Day, and while this may not be as comfy and warm as Fuller’s Old Winter Ale, but it’s expressive in every sense - the aroma and taste is filled with tasty roast malt, strong cranberries and red fruits, sticky molasses, hidden booze and bone dry biscuits. Very festive and perfect to go with my Stollen for a cold damp Christmas night. Merry Xmas!

A little fruitiness on top of a roasted malt. Just the right amount of spice and bitterness to off set. A decent holiday ale.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma: alcohol, intense caramel, grain and bread malts, light toasted flavours. Appearance: clear, dark brown, massive, creamy, beige head. Taste: medium sweet. Palate: intense caramel sweets progress and intensify, lively carbonation, liquorice coming up, quite long finish. Overall: very malty and sweet English Strong Ale, slightly too fizzy, missing the “Christmas” spices. Bottle from Beers of Europe, Kings Lynn.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
33cl bottle served in a Delirium Noel glass. Pours a translucent dark brown which when held to the light shines a nice garnet colour. Mouthfeel is medium to thin with a nice balance of carbonation. Aroma is malt and spices. Taste is toffee, molasses and spices with quite a pronounced bitterness. Tastes like a Scottish style Belgian (ala McChouffe) with added spices. OK but not up to the other Belgian Xmas ales.
