3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 KyotoLefty (3760) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAY 31, 2009
Draught at the brewery.
Shiny, glowing, black. Flavor of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Strongly roasted, with good balance and enough sweetness. Smooth and creamy palate. Good stuff.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Capa (1637) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 30, 2009
Black with a tan head. Chocolate, light roasted malts, vanilla in the aroma. Much the same in the flavor but a hint of soke added as well. Very smooth and easy to drink. One of the better Schwarzbier’s in Japan.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheJollyOne (221) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - MAY 28, 2009
Very dark but clear brown, tall tan head dissipates quickly, reflecting the thin palate that follows. Nose is roasted malt, chocolate and burnt sugar. Light charred opening, coffee, chocolate, and fig. Strengthens beautifully as it warms. Not overly rich, thin and simple on the palate. Refreshing and drinkable. A hint of that metallic quality that haunts these Japanese beer halls is present, but nowhere near as bad as Fujiyama.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 chuwy (34) - JAPAN - MAY 13, 2009
A very drinkable schwarz.
I usually don’t go for the German Schwarz style, as I find it too thin bodied. This one is a little on the thicker side. rich dark color. Good balanced mouthfeel.not too much caramel, thick malty prescence and nice malty nose. Not the best beer in the world of course, but not a bad one to quench your thirst with. I could almost describe it as a ’chocolate schwarz’, though it’s not over sweet. I could down a few of these. Had on tap at Gotenba Kogen’s all u can drink and eat banquest hall, from their automated beer dispenser in a frosted glass.
