Commercial Description:
Bottle; Unfiltered.
Also available from Wetherspoons in casks.
"This full-tasting, but deceptively drinkable, amber ale has a good fruitiness and a nice hop edge which tempers the caramellised malt. It is clean and precise, within an almost perfect balance of Challenger and Goldings hops.
The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

Competent, would have thought remarkable ten years ago. Dark amber, large light head. Nose of sweet malts and hops. Taste of sweet malts and ... British hopping in a Belgian beer? Delightful, light first beer of a long new years eve feast.

Beautiful colour first off. Nose is bubblegum, yeast and fruit. Same in the mouth, it is very sweet. Doesn’t really distinguish itself like the classic does. Good but not great and could use some refinement.

330ml bottle. Slightly, hazy amber in colour with a decent, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, yeast and a touch of earthy pepperiness. Flavour was sweet, with lots more caramel, red fruit and a dryish finish. Enjoyable.

Pours a dark cloudy amber with huge tan head. There is a lot of carbonation. The aroma is ripe fruits, molasses, and somewhat metallic. The taste is similar to the nose with the addition of Belgian yeast. There is a very nice dry and crisp burst of fruit on the finish. This beer was satisfying from beginning to end. Now time to rinse and repeat.

2004 vintage in a 750. We made three separate pours from the top down the bottle, with three very different beers coming out as a result of differing gravity. This rating is for the bottom third. Oxidized, with caramel, plum, fig, dried fruit, and a touch of sour in the nose. Fruity, caramel flavor with lots of dried fruit. Much better than when fresh.

Pours ambery gold color with huge, excellent-formed white head. Nice retention level, good lacing. Rich fruity esters on the nose with peppery phenols, perfumy cloves, banana and bubble gum hints. There’s some floral, resinous hop presence in the aroma which is get more herbal in the mid-palate. The palate starts crisp and spicy with assistance of caramelized malty orange and other sugary, malty accents. Quite herbalish and lingering in the hop profile. Although it has a very lively carbonation its very smooth bodied with just a faint hint of alcohol warmth. It’s rather sessionable, but it has some depth. The guys at Het Anker r seem to know somethin :)

750ml bottle. Poured a deep hazy amber color with a huge foamy white head with good retention. Aroma of light caramel malt with the usual yeast presence. Taste is mostly dominated by some caramel malt, light spices and light bitter finish. Taste also had a slight funk that threw the flavor off a bit. Other than that a decent beer.
