"This full-tasting, but deceptively drinkable, amber ale has a good fruitiness and a nice hop edge which tempers the caramellised malt. It is clean and precise, within an almost perfect balance of Challenger and Goldings hops.
The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

0.75 bottle. Very hazy, neon-orange color with a medium, white head. Fruity, a touch of citrus aroma with loads of spices, a little malts, and some alcohol too. Taste is mostly sweet with a secondary yet noticeable bitterness. Composed of caramel, fruits, brown sugar, spices, and unfortunately again some alcohol. Medium to full body; texture is slick yet creamy at the same time - quite unusual but splendid; carbonation is average. Finish does not suffer from lack of length or strength but rather gratuitous bitterness towards the end as well as dearth of balance. Overall the beer is really good but it feels more like a work in progress than a finished brew; it simply under-performs in a competition against itself.

Slightly hazy amber with enormous white head. Light fruity, apple, lots of spices (cloves), piny bitterness. Medium bodied, creamy full carbonation feel, dry finish and quite some alcohol presence. Ok but slight over carbonated

Bottle: Pours dark amber with a whipped tan head. Aroma is yeasty, caramel, fruity. Taste is cherry cola, caramel malt. Creamy, yeasty....a slight wooden bitter finish. A very nice, easy beer for the ABV.

Bottle from Bert’s Bierhuis. The beer has an amber color and a large tinted white head, with a lot of bubbles. The aroma is caramel, malts, yeast, fruits and hops. The taste is full and spicy and after a while it’s fresh. Tones from malts, a little bitterness from the hops and spices. Different taste are well balanced. The finish is fresh, dry and a little bitter. Not as good as the other ones from Carolus, but they also show with this beer that brewing is their speciality. Bravo!
