COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Unfiltered.
Also available from Wetherspoons in casks.
"This full-tasting, but deceptively drinkable, amber ale has a good fruitiness and a nice hop edge which tempers the caramellised malt. It is clean and precise, within an almost perfect balance of Challenger and Goldings hops.
The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

Cask at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Strange to find this on draught. Copper colour with lasting off white head. Hoppy/yeast aroma with sweetish caramel and hop in mouth. Alcohol kick on end. Smoother than in a bottle

Bottle. Reddish brown beer with thin beige head. Port wine nose, good deep fruits but a tad too sweet. Good hop finish but this doesn’t have the necessary balance of flavours

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2006 Nov, 2005JDW, Rochester. Dangerously drinkable. A cuddly warmth with a little squeeze of spicy orange from the generous pale malt. A Christmas cake perfume rises through the palate enticing suggestions of burnt almonds, marzipan, corriander and Proust’s madeline cake. Idle moments of flavour speculations flattering to the beer geek’s ego, but essentially the flavour notes are as expected from a strong pale ale and are in a fairly limited range. It’s a smooth, gentle barley wine - but lacks genuine character. [3.0]
June, 2006 <a href=http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/95/959 Herne Bay Sweet and fruity with a rotting banana note. Full ripe. Lots of alcohol notes, including plastic. Tastes like a full bodied strong lager. OK. Nice and strong. The pub rules forbade the barman from serving me a pint glass, so I had to have two halves. [3.0]

UPDATED: APR 27, 2007 Mid amber with a medium off-white head. Sweet and fruity malt aroma with a good burst of alcohol. I found the taste less impressive. It lacked bite and impact. Easy drinking, but not up to the standard of other Gouden Carolus offerings. 27.4.07 Cask at Wetherspoon’s, Milton Keynes, and an utterly different experience. Pale amber with a creamy white head. Sweet aroma. Oily mouthfeel with all sorts of odd nuances: pear drops, cough sweets, toothpaste, cinnamon, mince pies. Couldn’t decide if I loved it or hated it. OK, I hated it. 4,4,3,3,9:2.3

Cask conditioned @ Giddy Bridge (JDW), Soton, 8% abv. Masses of toffeish plummy malt, banana and a touch of liqouricey alcohol. Fairly drinkable for an 8% but lacks depth.

An amber beer with a huge slightly pink head. The aroma is spicy and hoppy - I pick up coriander, figs, and oranges. The flavor is sweet woody with a herbal note mixing in with som fruit, where I pick out oranges. The mouthfeel is very smooth, and the end woody dry.

(bottle) Cloudy dark orange/amber colour with a frothy off-white medium head. Fruity (grapefruit, lemon peel) aroma with milk chocolate and a dense spicy note. Bitter flavour, medium body, fizzy carbonation. Initial malty and fruity with a bitterfruity note, that lingers into the end. A good one.
