COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Unfiltered.
Also available from Wetherspoons in casks.
"This full-tasting, but deceptively drinkable, amber ale has a good fruitiness and a nice hop edge which tempers the caramellised malt. It is clean and precise, within an almost perfect balance of Challenger and Goldings hops.
The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

Poured from a 330ml bottle. Pours a deep amber with a bubbly, off-white head. Smell is as you’d expect from a strong, darker belgian beer. Plenty of malts and dark fruits, a some spices. The taste is of caramel, spices, malts, plenty of fruit character including green apple which surprised me. Quite full bodied, medium carbonation, went down very well with a lovely smooth finish and a slightly alcoholic feel.

From 330 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy hazelnut brown with a thick off-white head that sticks around. Aromas of raisins, caramel, flowers, orange and pepper, plus a whiff of alcohol. Taste starts out with orange zest, raisins and biscuit malt before a peppery hop notes builds in the mid palate. Lingering finish with caramel, lemon and honey. Fruity aftertaste. Great stuff.

8.8.2014. Very foamy. Sweet caramel malts, belgian yeast and spices on the nose. Soft, yeasty, some sweetness.

Bottle. Hazy deep golden color with a huge foamy off-white head. Sour aroma of yeast, grain and apricot. Bitter, metallic taste with a bitter finish. Medium body. A bit sticky feel.

Fresh aroma. After a while aroma turns to a floral kind. Muddy brown colour. Sweet and creamy maltiness in the mouth.

Ljusbrun oxiderad? med stort vit skum. Ganska mycket karamell och belgisk jäst i doft och smak. Även lite humle och sött

Hazy amber brown with a lasting foam top. Honey, dried red fruits, roasted malts, glazed roasted nuts, some wood and spices. Long finish with wood and fruit, dry in the mouth.

33cl bottle, somewhere in time.
In short: fruity belgian ale.
Classic Carolus revisited, this time with some caramalts, giving some caramel aromas and flavours, still alcohol noticeable, quite fruity. Nothing to complain, nothing to remark, just as you expected.

Not bad but doesn’t come close to some of the other beers these guys carry. A little honey sweetness and syrupy sense here. Pours hazy maroon with puffy head and good lacing. Some booze and a little rust. Sweet finish. Bottle.
