"This full-tasting, but deceptively drinkable, amber ale has a good fruitiness and a nice hop edge which tempers the caramellised malt. It is clean and precise, within an almost perfect balance of Challenger and Goldings hops.
The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

In a chilled mug: poured a beautiful, dark copper with a very thick, lingering head and a ton of lacing. Somewhat hazy when held to the light. Aroma is sweet corn and alcohol, drowning out a few other hints of fruit and brown sugar. Very very sweet. Caramel is certainly there, but is beaten into submission by the alcohol content and the very sweet aftertaste. Slight bitter twinge to the finish, but negligible. I’ve had Belgians with higher alcohol that managed a much better balance than this.

Dark amber with a thick dense head. Caramel, malty, spicy, some dark fruits. Medium to low sweetness with that dry-sour-astringent-alcoholic character that many strong belgian ales have, and which I do not really like. Full bodied and average carbonation.

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2015 Aroma: Almost no smell at all, caramel, plums, yeast. Appearance: Copper beer with a lot of carbonation and thus a large and steady white head. Taste/Palate: Fruit marmalade, caramel, yeast, bread.

Poured from 330ml bottle after cellaring for 9 months. Clear, dark orange amber with a 4-finger khaki head and very good lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, plums, golden raisins, brown sugar and Belgian yeast. Taste of caramel, plums, toffee, golden raisins, Belgian yeast, spices, candi and dried fruit. Medium body and medium carbonation with a pleasant mouthfeel. Very nice beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Had this in 2009 in Mechelen, Belgium. Murky to opaque amber, creamy off white to tan head. Bubbles visible in the glass. Cherry and plum jam, fruit juice, some orange peel, spices and dry fruits in the background. Very complex. Medium body, medium carbonation. Quite a bite from alcohol, biscuit, malts. Mouthfeel is less dominant than the aroma. Needs more balance, would be great otherwise.

Clear deep amber colour with a frothy beige lasting head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, dried fruits like sultanines and raisins with candy sugar notes and roast malts with some barnyard elements. Smoothly carbonated, slick texture and full bodied. Dried sugared fruit sweetness builds the core developing interesting juicy herbal light spice impressions. Lasting sweet finish.

Lots of foam, which is coarse, thick and persistent. Light malt flavor and touch of hazelnut flavoring. Nice big volume. Slightly yeasty, which one often encounters in Belgian brew. The flavor is nutty, but also reveals little plum and a fruity sweetness that lasts a hoppy bitterness with semi-dry to dry finish. In the aftertaste there is also given room for a little seasoning. It does not differ significantly from the pack of Belgian amber ales, but precisely its slightly recessed shape makes it a worthy favorite to me.
