The famous Gouden Carolus Classic has been in existence since 1958 and this special version was brewed to the original recipe (which hadn’t changed much in its first fourty years, I suspect) and bottled with the same label - or print, in fact. Tasted at almost six years of age at Brugs Bierfestival 2014. Deep burgundy brown beer with off-white head and a wonderful aroma revealing a maderisation which has only added to the basic complexity of a Gouden Carolus Classic, sweetish, loads of candied fruits, chocolate, liquorice, marzipan, delicious warming alcohol in the finish, like and old port wine. I’ve always been a sucker for Gouden Carolus and this is easily the best one I ever had. Very memorable.

Bottle sample @ BAB’14.

i had NO clue this was ’rare ’ onley 4 ratings? the bottle states it was made for the 50th anniversery of expo 58, so it has to be 2008 ... why onley 4 rates ? ive seen it at other places, still selling it ... pours hazy brown, small white foam smells like toffee, caramel, ’old ’ taste is like a fine port/wine. waaw ! very reminding of old rochefort 10. so complex, so good ! definetly worth a try !

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2013 2008 Vintage. 33 cl. bottle sampled. Thx! to Kraddel. Pours a dark ruby ruby mixed with murky brown & almost no beige head. Vintage notes in the smell, huge liquorish, iron, thick herbs, bit thinned by age. Taste is liquorish, iron, vintage notes, oxidation, thinned caramel, brown sugar, thick herbs, some booze in the back, bitter copper,,.. Vintage notes are overt but still restrained. Has held up reasonably.

33cl bottle from ça sent la biere (mail order), portugal. Dark brown color with thin head. High sweetness, low bitterness and sourness. Aroma is malt, caramel and cellar. note: just noticed that bb date is 21/06/2011, that could have degradated the aroma.

Bottle@ Kulminator. Best before 21/06/2011. Darker brown coloured beer with a short brown head. Rather yeasty herby and alcholic developed older aroma. Full rather heavy palate. Finish is spicy alcoholic with a full sweet herby and older creamy hinted ending. Still very good.

Original bottle from mid 70’s at Kulminator , same recipe
Head: none
Colour: almost black
Smell: sherry, calvados, malts, sweet, nothing like a beer anymore ( in a good way !! )
Taste: the aging of the beer brings so much flavours in it you can’t even imagine ... , mostly like the smell but with some much tiny little extra’s , you should drink it to really know it ... too hard to tell :)
