Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

A very solid Belgian beer. The yeast spicyness is really nice. The dark fruit and candied sugar sweetness is superior.

Wat een lekker donker bier! Echt een aanrader. Meteen een lekkere volle smaak met een heerlijke, lichte bittere nasmaak. Lichte caramel tint. Mooie donkere kleur met een mooie schuimkraag.

Bottle in Aba-jour, Ghent. Not sure how this has stayed off my radar, but this was a delightful discovery. Suggested as an accompaniment to my beef stew. Colour is opaque almost black with a creamy off white/beige head. Nose is prunes, raisins, dark fruit, plum, chocolate, slight lactic, roasted malt, salty, caramel, bit of ice cream, vanilla. Taste is sweet, salty, chocolate, caramel salted caramel, roasted malt, dark fruity, prune, raisin. Rich flavourful sweet and robust strong ale.

Bottle. Pours a dark rich brown/red with a nice thin, but lasting tan head. Smell is a pot of raisins, being soaked in a fine bourbon with some red wines. In the mouth and wow - it’s very FULL - there’s a slight oiliness at first and the beer feels rather thick, but there’s plums, red fruits, raisin, breads, roasted nuts, a slight coffee. There’s banana to be pulled out, some vanilla, butterscotch. It’s sweet, then warm, then a slight bitterness. You never really get a handle on the beer, it keeps giving you something else to play with, to pull out of the flavour combos. LOVE IT!

Tap. Dark mahogany pour, thin to medium tan head. Not a lot of lacing or residue but that may be the glass. Aroma, malt, caramel, sweet, dark fruit, raisins, spices. Taste is similarly complex but also has a bit of nuttiness in it and a touch of saltiness. Alcohol content provides some warmth. Excellent.

A giant raisan; in nose body and taste. Super sweet, complex and a little bit spicy. Slightly tannin, but in a nice way. Warming alcohol beautifully blends in. Worth the $16 I paid for it!
