Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

75cl bottle. Dark beer, brown, murky, dense creamy brownish head. Sharp nose with liquor roasted malts and zabaione (egg-nog). Aroma of roasted malts and brandy. Finish is spicy with fuel notes. Dry. Full bodied, proper carbonation, boozy, palatable, with character. For sure a massive one, possibly an emperor’s beer indeed. However was a quick tasting not in the proper setting, i need to review in detail this one. It was good.

Bottle - dark reddish brown with just small lacing on sides - no real head. Little carbonation, ok mouthfeel. Sweet caramel aroma. A beer to sip - good lasting taste, port wine consistency but again a strong Belgium with, for me, a too alcoholic after taste - just not my style.

Carolus Classic is definitely a good choice to anyone who likes strong beers with emphasis on wine-like flavors. One of the beers that you remember amongst others. APPROVED BY TAVERNY’S BLACK METAL CREW !

cellared 330 ml bottle from Asheville (NC) served in a Belgian snifter. June 2013 bottling date. Appearance: just OK, with a rather weak head over a dark, hazy brown body. Spotty lacing. Aroma and Flavor: Superb aroma and excellent flavor. Loads of toffee with dark ripe and dried fruit notes. The flavor does have a touch more alcohol than optimal but I can’t fault the deeply satisfying aroma. Feel: medium carbonation in a medium-light body. 8.5% ABV is mostly hidden. O: Excellent!

pours a hazy dark chestnut with a large steady beige head and a nice lacing. aroma of caramel, dark fruits, prunes, nuts, cola. sweet and slightly sour flavour, mostly burnt rock candy and raisins, but also prunes, honey, spices. long sweet finish, giving way to slight bitterness. alcohol is very well hidden, I could probably drink a lot of it. very good.
