UPDATED: AUG 31, 2003 dark ruby-brown colour, big creamy head, nice lacing, malty, prune aroma, bready, vinous, very smoot, lightly sweet, sharp bitterness with a touch of acidity, long dry malty finish with notes of alcohol - robust and complex, the freshness of the mouthfeel is tempered by the quite heavy finish

Dark brown color with thick brownish foam head. Lacing to glass and sticking to lip. Sweet fruity and caramel aroma, caramel in taste but still bitter enough for my taste. Did well with tomato soup. (Utrecht 201203)

Not overpowering, smells of malts, caramel and bread. This is very smooth and reminds me of the Aventis Weizen bock.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 superspak (783) - Michigan, USA - MAY 23, 2012
330 ml bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours a very hazy dark reddish brown color with a small 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin film that lingers. Some slight spotty lacing on the glass, with minimal carbonation streaming up. Aromas of huge raisin, prune, pear, caramel, molasses, toffee, biscuit, tobacco, roasted malt, light chocolate, herbal, and mild yeast spiciness. Very nice and balanced maltly aromas, with good complexity. Taste of big caramel, raisin, prune, pear, chocolate, biscuit, tobacco, molasses, butterscotch, toffee, and light yeast spiciness. Big malty flavors on the finish, with moderate dryness; and lingering notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, dark fruits, chocolate, and light herbal for a short bit. Great balance of flavors with good complexity; and no cloying sweetness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy and slick mouthfeel that is quite nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is a great Belgian dark ale! Quite robust feeling with nice complexities; and a big malty flavor profile. Really enjoyable stuff.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 17, 2012
A brown 33cl bottle, best before 12st Oct 2011, drank on a damp and cold Jan evening in 2009.
Poured into a Corsendonk tulip shapped glass.
Deep red, dark ruby when held to a light source with a good solid foaming head, tan in colour.
Sweet liquorice hits my nose, candy without the floss, a realy interesting aroma.
The sweet liquorice smell is in the taste too, very prominent. Red and Blackberry tones bring the sweetness into check and the beer is a fine blend of differing flavours which merge into a great tasting beer.
The 8.5% ABV isn’t masked completely, but it is well hidden by the richness of the beers body adding a luscious, sumptuous, mellow feel to the experience.
An elaborate and elegant, highly-flavoured beer that was a joy to drink and review. There are not many beers better than this out there!
